Does anybody else here keep Cornish X?

I know that most people probably don’t keep them as pets because of the health issues and that’s definitely hard to avoid. They easily develop heart issues and they break their legs really easily. I have a certain way that I like to take care of them. My first one lived 2 1/2 years and she got attacked. She could’ve lived longer. The one I have now just turned 6 months and is very healthy. Does anybody else here keep them as pets?

No, I don't. There are hundreds of great breeds that would make you happier and make it inadvisable to raise a hybrid developed specifically to be butchered by 8 weeks of age.

The only reason I did ever get one was to see if I could take care of one. I love the breed so much, they are my favorite breed I’ve ever had and I’ve had a lot of different breeds. I will never go without one. But I understand what you mean about people not wanting one.

They are bred to be kept for meat. They are not meant to live longer than 15 weeks at the most. I agree with ChickenCanoe - there are hundreds of other breeds that you can keep for pets and they will be much easier to care for and happier, too. Please don't make chickens suffer when they don't have to.

Also, before chickens were domesticated they lived in the woods....and in the woods there are predators like foxes, bobcats, raccoons, and more! (Everyone loves chicken, right?) Chickens are naturally very good at keeping their sicknesses and injures from being noticed. So it might be too late by the time you notice something is wrong. And the poor chicken would have been suffering all that time.

Oh, and just to let you guys know. I don't support the making of this breed. It's unnatural and terrible, in my opinion.

I agree. They should not have been created at all. But she has a whole acre and I give her vitamins but I believe that at least she should have at least had a chance at life.

True, but still, there is no need to make a chicken (or any animal at that) suffer when it doesn't have to suffer. There are other chickens out there that were bred for eggs and pets to keep you happy....

She is not suffering at all. I do know that they can hide thinks like that very well, but she can fly, run, and do anything any other chicken can do. My last Cornish X laid better than most of the chickens I’ve ever had and the biggest eggs.

Here’s a pic of her at 4 months and the second at 5 months. I don’t have a pic of her at 6 months old but I will get one in the mornin. She’s my favorite chicken I’ve ever had.
