As far as riding animals go, I have always wanted a camel.

Does anybody here keep them? How does the care of them compare with other larger livestock (ie horses, cattle, llamas, etc..)? Are they easy to train?

This information is available in bits and pieces around the internet, but I was just wondering if anybody here has personal experience with them.

Thanks!

I don't have one....I think they are adorable though! I know they are closely related to llamas but that's all I know about them. I saw some once going through Texas. It was the strangest sight to look over in a pasture and see a herd of camels standing there!

A lady up the road has a Bactrian (your pic is of a Dromedary).

The bactrian eats about two flakes of hay a day. And is fat. Amazing.

It's a lot of fun to call him to the front of his stall and feed him apples, LOL. He reaches DOWN to get them, LOL.

They're pretty big and heavy and they definitely know it. Training/handling them is not for the indulgent, timid or faint of heart.

I have never owned one but I know that they can be dangerous to their handlers and rough with each other(if not properly trained and handled)...

I also know that you can make some really high calorie cheese from their milk that will keep you going for a whole day, really, people in the desert use it as travel food!

(edited to clarify a little bit)
