Hello everyone,
This is our rooster. I was wondering what was going on with his feet. They have been like this for a while. It looks like scaled leg mites, but it goes up his leg, and he has stiff, bloody spots. He stands around a lot, holding his feet up, so I think it's uncomfortable to him. If anybody knows what it is, pease tell me what I can do for it. I was thinking maybe dipping his feet in coconut oil? Also, if anybody has a clue what breeds he may have in him, I would love to hear. I'm pretty certain he is a cross I between a bantam and a large fowl, as he is kind of smaller. Thanks!

There’s a few different ways or curing scaly leg mites I like to do it the most natural way possible which means a spa day for the ladies. I know it might be difficult to handle your birds so I would suggest the local feed store to get the spray. The coop is a must!! Take out all old bedding if you have sand or dirt make sure to scrap off the top layer. Roost bars need to be scrubbed! (I use water dawn dish soap and vinegar) scrub the floor of the coop (I use a mop I have a wooden floor) clean the nest boxes and apply fresh bedding once fully dried. I clean everything from top to bottom including anything in the run! The best prevention is to make sure your birds are able to dust bath all year around. In the winter I use wood ash and DE in the summer I use contractor sand and DE. Now dust bathing doesn’t cure but it helps prevent. As for what I do naturally I soak my hen in like warm water first them I soak her in apple cider vinegar water for a few seconds I let her dry off then I apply olive oil and protrollum jelly to their legs and let them free range while the coop is under quartine :th here’s a helpful link where I learned about scaly leg mites.

Yes, I thought it might be something else, because of the bloody spots on his legs. Also, I've never known the mites to actually cause the bird pain.......but I don't know.

Thanks everyone!
I can change the bedding on the floor, but the coop doesn't have an actual floor in it, so I can't clean it. They free range everyday, and have access to dust bathing areas also. It's weird, because he is the only one in the whole flock that has this.

I'd focus the treatment on him then. perhaps for some unknowable reason he is more susceptible and the girls have been able to stave it off so far. I'd also focus on the roost. digging out a 6" layer off the dirt floor is probably a good idea. I do this every so often anyway to keep the floor from rising too much, like once or twice a year, and figure it helps cut down on any parasitic cycles that may get going below the radar.
