Does anyone do medical transcription work from home?

Quote:
Yes medical coding is what I meant....sorry.

What do you all suggest, babysit, dog walker?

I'd rather walk dogs than baby sit

If she can sew, she could make those saddles, everyone loves those. Or make jewelry........

Not exactly working at home but we have a great pet sitter than comes and feeds the dogs and chickens when we are out of town. She and her husband are dependable to a fault and really don't charge enough. They will also water plants and bring in the mail.

I've been a nurse for 18+ years and took an online medical transcription course. My dream was to work from home also....

As with anything else one places time, money and dreams into, one must really do some good research and ask those who actually do the job, like these folks on this thread.

I chose the wrong online school, first off. By wrong, I mean the companies that hire usually only consider graduates of a few top online schools....if you went to one that wasn't as reputable and established, you kissed your time and money good-bye.

I didn't research internet capabilities in my area and just what companies require~my school should have explained this simple fact: Most companies will not hire you unless you can get broadband or cable internet. They find dial-up and satellite too unreliable when sending and receiving data streams. I can only get dial-up in my area.

Unless I moved and went back to a reputable school, my money and time had been wasted.

You need experience working in an office setting doing medical transcription before they will hire you to work from home. This is not always true but enough to make it too difficult to find a good job. If you do not live near any hospital or clinic that does their own, in-house transcription, you can, again, kiss your time and money spent on training online good-bye.

All in all, for me at least, it was a big ol' mistake that will take me some time to get over....I owe money for schooling, I took off a year of work to go through the course at an accelerated rate...lost that year of income.

I was fast, I know my medical terminology down cold from being a nurse and a massage therapist, I was willing to put in the long hours, had bought all the equipment and medical spell check software, etc.

I bombed, big time.

Listen to these gals...please. There are other ways of making money at home that involve less money, time and heartbreak.

I also went through a very fast paced 1 year certification course 8-5 M-F and I kissed $10,000 away! The school said that you can work from home right out of school! That was the biggest BS I have ever heard in my life. I was only 22, so I was a bit naive and fell for it.

I am NOT licensed but have ten years of medical/dental/vision claims processor/adjuster for an insurance company and I did a pretty good job until the new manager and new system, I got terminated. There are good positions out there for me but they do not want to hire a hearing impaired person that can not do phone jobs (which it was not required of me at my old job). It was very very tough for me, and not only that, I was pregnant.

Yes you have to learn to read the DX, the CPT codes, read all doctor's notes and see if it matches what the insurance will cover and not cover. Sometimes the system will let you know it won't cover a certain item or you need to take it to your senior claims person to override the system to pay for the treatments. Sometimes more often than not, "who you know, they will get while others won't be covered" kind of thing. Shady, I must say at the least. I love my supervisor and I loved my job. You can not make too many mistakes either or you will get canned.

sometimes it peeves me, when someone gets the college education in this type of job, employers want experience. Well how would you get the experience if you don't get the job?! It has to start somewhere!

So you did not get a job doing medical transcription?

Because unless you did... you have no idea what we are talking about. Not to be rude, but unless you been THERE, done THAT, then you don't know.

I never said or acted like I know anything about medical transcription. All I said was that sometimes you can get hired doing jobs you were not trained to do. If YOU say she won't then op I am sorry you won't get hired to do that kind of job.

Nothing burns my behind worse than someone new taking over a company and going through and getting rid of people that have put many years into a company. I feel they are trying to avoid that 20 yr retirement mark on some of them.

Sorry this happened to you.
