Does anyone else have a hen who growls?

We have a hen(Jenny) who is the Alpha hen of the group. She pecks everyone to keep them in line and sounds the alarm when the Chicken Hawk flies over. Last night when I shut the hens in their house she looked at me and made a growling noise. Not too much different than a dog only softer. Everyone thinks that I'm crazy. Has anyone else heard a hen growl or do I need to see someone?

My hens sometimes make a low chirring noise if I peek in the coop after dark. Mine each have different calls to warn about different kinds of predators, too.

Doesn't sound exactly like growling, but it could be the breed.

Or you could just be crazy. It sometimes happens to chicken people.

Yeah, the dinosaur noise. If you just heard that and saw only their feet, you'd think you were in Jurassic Park.

I have a 4 month old pullet that sounds like a yappy dog instead of a chicken. The first time I heard it I thought there was a toy dog somehow in with the chickens. It's the strangest sound I have ever heard from my chicks ever.

We call our girls 'velociraptors' when they do that, because it sounds very reptilian. We have a hen who is broody right now, and every time someone walks into the coop she growls. Some of ours also do the chirring sound, especially after they've roosted for the night.

Have a baby monitor in coop: At night, when there is a predator at a distance (coon for instance), they growl. When it gets closer the hens whine and the roo gives out with some soft `predator' barks. When it's up close to the coop they all go silent (time to grab the rifle). They also chortle in unison when it starts to rain.
