Does anyone else not like silkies?

Quote:
I love my 100 silkies! Every single one of them has a different personality. My boys are the sweetest though. I have whites, blues, splashes, buffs, blacks, and lavenders.

This is the 3rd "Does anyone else hate Silkies?" thread I have seen since I joined BYC, and they all got shut down so far as I can recall. Maybe with it being a holiday the mods are away and just have not gotten 'round to shutting this one down. All I can say is Silkies vary greatly in disposition. I have had some that were just as active and no different than any other chicken and others that were near comatose. Most are somewhere in between. I believe there is a Silkie out there for everyone (IF one is looking to try different breeds). Anything else is just bigotry.

Nicely said red catcher! Im tired of seeing these threads! Well I hate those big for nothing breeds like orpingtons and barred rocks. I really dont like mutts like EE's but im not gonna make a big thread about hating them. Sorry for being harsh but im fed up with people bashing this breed.

I like Silkies. I think they're pretty and are particularly wonderful brooders and mothers. HOWEVER, my only Silkie is 14 months old and has NEVER LAID AN EGG!

We have five. We've gotten as many as four eggs in a day from them, but sometimes for a stretch of time, none or only one or two. Some of them are super broody and they have mothered new chicks, but others of them have never gone broody and are just bully types about chicks or other hens getting near. So, like most hens, a mixture, individual differences, with some strong breed similarities. Not my favorites, but they can be very entertaining, are a hoot to watch running, have a beautiful low purr when happy, and are continuing to "grow" on me. ~G

To me, Silkies are one of those many breeds where it depends on the stock/quality. If it is from a hatchery, 90% of the time I would care less for one. . . They're ugly, IMO.

If they are from good quality breeding stock, then sure, they're adorable and often very beautiful.

I didn't care for silkies at all until I was given my first one a few years ago - a Black hen that was a retired shower

she was beautiful and very friendly and started me on having 'pet' chickens and not just laying chickens that I didn't much interact with.

I now have a flock of 13 silkies and they all have difference personalities. I have 4 laying hens right now and I usually get 3 eggs a day if not 4 some days if none of the oldest 3 are being broody and I'm trying to break them.

Now there are some silkies I've seen that are nearly comatose creatures and seem dumber than a box of rocks but really I see it in the nicer looking silkies that have HUGE crests that fall into their faces - once you clip that fuzz out of their view they are wild and active. I honestly am not a huge fan of giant crests/topknots because of the impracticality of it and the fact you have to trim their faces or band it so they can see and not be sitting ducks.
