You can get a lot of seed (50#) cheap at the feed store, or sometimes you can buy it by the pound. You can also buy it at a health food store in bulk, but it's more 'spendy.
Put seeds in a bucket, put in plenty of water to cover the seeds + an inch or two extra and let it soak for about a half day in a warm place (I use my sunroom). Then pour off the excess water, and just rinse the oats twice a day until they have sprouted. You might just try sprouting a cup of oats or whatever at first to see how much greenery it makes.
Sprouts will get rancid if you let them grow for very long, so feed them while they are tender and fresh. Right after they sprout, they can go into the fridge for a few days - just keep rinsing them and don't try to save them too long.
ETA: it's easiest to sprout them in a warm place, like a sunroom or you can set the bucket on top of the fridge or where ever it's kinda warmish.
cool! so, no soil with the oats and then buy some other discount seeds, just pretend like it's spring and grow stuff for the chickens! i love it!
