Does anyone have a Guinea Pig?

We've had about 4 guinea pigs over the years and they lived between 7 and 8 years. We had ours spayed and neutered and took them to the vet yearly for check ups.

We take her outside when it's nice. She has a big cage and we can turn it upside down and then she gets to eat the grass. We take ours to the vets to get her nails down every six months. They only charge $6.00 and I think that's better then me doing them. She is so good, she's never bit anyone and we even got her a halter, (its for a, well I can't think of what's it for) but it looks like something you would put on a dog instead of a collar. The only time she makes any noise is when she needs food.

She is my son's but he doesn't take care of her. He won a fish at a carnival and it died my son never said anything about the fish he doesn't even know it died and it's been 2 months. LOL

Great pets is all I have to say. Vitamin C is a must. Fresh pellets of either cavy or rabbit (with rabbit you have to add C to the water.) And plenty of veggie treats without over doing it. Hay is another staple - and especially for the male piggies as they can get impacted. An average piggie lives to be 5 years old, but I have known of them living up to 10 years of age. Most times people find their pigs die without much of any signs as pigs are prey animals and hide any symptoms they have until it is very late. Most vets also do not get enough schooling on these critters to know what they need. Only those that have specialized in small exotic animals will know the extent of their diet and systems. Never ever treat a guinea pig with penicillian as it is toxic to them.

And most importantly, the more you play with your piggie the happier and sweeter it will be.

Oh, and I see more adults and retired folks showing and raising pigs in our state. It is so fun.
