Does anyone have a pea without headfeathers?

I was just curious if any anyone has a pea without headfeathers?

My main black shoulder hen does not have them. It looks a little odd and all her children have had them so it must be rare. When I first got her 5 years ago I was told it was due to picking and I believed that as she was caged with a mate. He was killed some months later and she is my queen hen and no one messes with her. So its not due to picking, just a strange anomaly or adaptation.

Does her head look normal except for the lack of crest feathers? I just ask because we have had peapeople whose chicks got a bit "scalped" by brooder fans, and they seem to end up with some scar tissue on their heads. Maybe something like this happened to your gal before you got her, and it is preventing those feathers from growing?

Or it could be genetic, I hatched 3 or maybe 4 peas last season that had about a pea sized bald spot on their head coming out of the egg, and although it's less noticeable now because the surroundings feathers cover most of the area that bald spot is still 100% bald... This wasn't due to a injury or fan scalping, it has to be genetic as it's in the same location and same size across all my effected birds...

She was roughly 5 months old when I got her.

Gee, she was just up on the porch looking unthrifty. I am having a heck of a mite problem and pour on ivermec is no longer doing the job. She is not letting me catch her either, drat it.

Definetly has that look... That's one I would want to catch and keep a close eye on.

I try to keep an eye out but I have a sinus infection that's been kicking my butt for the last 10 days.

I just tried to catch her and she was having none of it. She is my matriarch and best mother there ever was so don't want to lose her.

This weather been VERY hard on my birds, going from 65 to 8 and back, etc. no time to acclimate.

Sorry you are sick and hope you get better, soon, but keep in mind that a pea can look like that and be dead the next day. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying she'll be dead tomorrow, just watch her as close as you can.

If her head was picked bad enough she may have developed scar tissue from that and it can prevent regrowth of the crest feathers. My CBS hen used to have a normal crest and then one year my BS male "Poppie" picked her head terribly in a fit of testosterone rage, she has a pitiful crest now, and its been that way for 5 years since he scalped her. She grows maybe 3 pitiful little feathers there and they look like a Charlie Brown Christmas Tree, if you know what I mean.

This is her on a "Good Hair" day. You can still see bald spots where nothing grows. If I didn't love Poppie I would have shot him, this girl is my best broody hen and he tried to kill her.
