does anyone have any tips on how to build an outdoor pond?????????????

I could tell you more than you ever wanted to know about ponds, pools, fountains...water features of any sort...but, the first question is, what exactly is the function/purpose of your pond?

Go to your library and check out some books, that's what I did--I don't have a pond anymore, that's another story. The big tip I can offer is to NOT use EPDM roofing membrane for the liner. I know some people think it's ok, but you need to use something fish-safe instead.

Hi ! My husband built me a 2-tier pond. It is beautiful, 'cept now it's under 4 ft of snow:mad:
I'm sure he would give you some hints, but a phone call would be better. Maybe email me personally?
BTW, our pond won a $100 gift certificate with Lilypons Water Garden Catalog a couple of years ago. It was pictured in their catalog:celebrate

put in a 450 gallon (or so) pond 4 years ago, did 85% of my research online. the info is out there by the tons...just start hunting and pecking through sites making notes as you go...after 2-3 hours youll have a plan formulated on the does and don'ts...then go on from there.
Water features are great!

There are many ways to build an out door pond, first consideration is to know how large or small you would like to have it.
Where it will be located, will it be permanent or movable?

A simple pond can be done easily and rather inexpensively,
Simple pond liners are sold in many Department stores and on line, oval round, square etc.

A hole should be dug the depth and a few inches of the bottom, leveled and bricks placed under the bottom of the tub for stability and for keeping it from cracking.
expand the hole for freezing and thawing( dependant on your location)
Soft sand to fill in around the pond tub also helps with expanding and thawing issues. plus makes a nice well groomed pond,
you can then add flag stone, field stone, or simple rocks you have kicking around the yard to spruce up the edging. potted plants in ceramic pots add to the view.

I have done one pond this way
I have also got another pond I am attempting to set in the ground.
We got lucky and were given an un drilled hot tub. had a small crack in the bottom but fiberglass repair and a little elbow grease stopped the leaking.
we dug a huge hole and let it winter over, we will be re digging the hole to remove any tumblers and setting the tub ground level with the top lip. which will give the turtles a way to climb up and sun on the lip or go down a ramp to forage the surrounding grass.
There are many ways to seat a pond, these are what I have done but there are other ways with digging holes and using the other types of pond liners etc.

Please be sure to post up pictures of your ideas, wants and questions, there are many gardners on here who will be very willing to give some awesome ideas and advice.
