Hi

I will be ordering a few birds from Mt Healthy and will also be getting 225 surplus male chicks with the order and I'm hoping that at least some of them will be Buff Orp roos that i can use in a cross I am wanting to do and I just wanted to see if any one has any pics of BO roos from Mt Healthy so I can get an idea of the quality of their particular strain.

Thanks

I have no pics but my cousin has them and they are fat hens, ones already went broody, and they are large and lay an egg everyday....

Thanks, thats what I was hoping to hear, from what I've seen Mt Healthy has better quality bird than most hatcheries probably because they have few breeds to concentrate on and a friend told me that even after when most hatcheries converted over to feather sexing strains, the owner of Mt Healthy kept the old strains that his father has.

I've seen KyBlue's pics of his White and Partridge Rock hens from there and they are really nice looking and closer to the breed standard than other hatchery stock I've seen.

Let me check my records Clint, I think we've still got a few of the Buffs from them. I'll check, and if they are I'll post pictures.

Edited to say; no, the only ones we have left are from Cackle hatchery. We sold the last ones from Mt. Healthy last week. Sorry.

Why would they have to switch strains??

I just got my order from them. I prefer Mt Healthy over the other hatcheries. Mine are just a few days old so i cant say as far as the BO go but I have gotten from them before and always have been happy. They ship out really well and quick though and out 75 I only had one loss.

Becuase it seems most hatcheries now days are breeding to different parental strains so they can cross them to get feather sexing chicks. Like when I ordered BOs and SLWs from Privett, I ordered them sexed and kept the sexes separate and the pullets grew in their wing and tail feathers quicker and the males are slower so they now seem to be doing it by feather sexing instead of vent sexing, like the way they do with Amber Links.

But I guess that instead of bothering with keeping of with crossing to different strains, Mt. Healthy must be keeping the old heritage strains that his father bred and breeding them and still keeping the quality up as good as a hatchery can I guess, of course with them needing to mass produce the chicks they arent going to be able to cull like a breeder needs too, but from what I have seen of their birds they look a lot better than most hatchery stock.

Crossing my fingers for ya to get some buffs in the surplus.I know a few people who have ordered and they always got barred/americana/and billions of RIR!!!I ordered a pullet special from them and got buff/barred/RIR/americana and for the surplus males i ordered I got nothing but RIR roosters!!!! lol.luckily they were for market anyway. Their birds did very well and I only lost one.Well he actually ended up crippled up somehow,so I took care of it.Most of the BO I have seen from them look really nice but are only a yellowed color. It has been hard to find a really nice "Buff" lately.

Thanks for the info. I do hope I get a few buffs but other breeds like the RIRs would be fine too. Fryer sized RIR cockerels seem to be a favorite breed for the hispanics that come to the local livestock sale around here to buy roos to eat so the RIRs would be great for that if I do end up with a lot of them. I dont care for Easter Eggers though and the roosters especially arent worth much around here so hopefully I wont get many or any of them.
