Does anyone here have barnevelders?

I would love to hear more about this breed and what your experience is of them. They certainly are gorgeous and their egg colour is also beautiful. Do you know of any good breeders of these birds?

I have a 2 barnevelder pullets. They are only 2 1/2 months old, so I can't give you much information on them yet.

My Barnevelders came from a breeder...can't remember their name. They were beautiful birds. Out of 30 - 40 pullets / hens, I might get 1-3 eggs a day. And they weren't dark. And the girls were super seasonal. The would lay from March through August. Sometimes into September and October. The only time laying picked up was when new pullets went on the yard. They would lay good for a week or two and then just peter out like the rest of the hens. It was depressing to go get their eggs in the evenings really. More often than not there weren't any.

All I can say is that they were beautiful though.

Don't get your hopes up too high about egg color in barnies. In this country, the egg color has mostly been lost in this breed.

I currently have two young pullets, and two cockerels. I have seen a pic of the eggs from this breeder and they were not bad, but it remains to be seen what these will actually lay. But I'm very attracted to the dark and colored egg layers, so I thought I'd give em a try. So far they are pretty little kids, and that's about it.

I have found with mine that I need to feed them extra corn with their layer pellets to get them to lay. They seem to do better when the weather is colder. They eat more, but they also lay more. They may be better adapted to Northern climates, I don't know since I live in NW TN.

Oh yeah...egg color was horrible. Definitely not dark...maybe a 3 on the Marans egg scale and that was for the pullets. They quickly lightened up.
