****does anyone know this breed of dog personaly?presa canario-update*****

Some of the breeds that I have heard families rave about for their protective and watchful nature in regards with kids are:
-Dobies
-Some rotties (I've heard really mixed reviews)
-Am pits from known breedings/lines
-Am staffs
-Some GSDs (again, mixed reviews)
-Some Tibetan mastiffs, though the people I've heard that from have Asian lines, not the US lines which I hear are bred to be far more docile
-Bouvier des Flanders (sorry, probably massacred that spelling)
-Bull terrier (mixed reviews)
-Bull mastiff (mixed reviews)

I can say that our little ACD has protected my husband and myself on numerous occasions and in different situations (and once protected our best friend who was pet sitting her...the only person outside the family she has ever fully accepted). But, as you probably know from yours, so many heelers seem to gravitate towards adults, or only one person, seeing kids as either something to herd or something to ignore. Children can makes some ACDs very nervous. So I hear you on wanting a different breed for your kids.

I've heard other families talk about breeds that are great with their kids, but they either aren't protective of them, or are more geared to barking and warning than protecting, so I didn't include them.

that's why you have to go with a GOOD breeder. You would be amazed at the number of people who don't even recognize my GSDs. They are used to the BYB dogs that are advertised in the paper every day.
No matter what breed you get, you are going to have to go with a good breeder to insure that you get a good dog. Any dog from a bad breeder is going to be a crap shoot. I've met labs that were down-right vicious and GSDs that were over-friendly and loved everyone. Too many breeders just take whatever 2 dogs are handy and breed with no regards to what the pups will be like.

Amen to that!

One of the Belgians might suit you too. As with GSDs they can have some lines that are poor in temperament or health, but I think overall it is easier to find a good one of those than a good GSD. I probably wouldnt go looking on my own, I'd talk to someone who's in the breed, but not selling anything.

What about a Golden Retriever? I work at a Vet clinic and the ones that come in are quite big.

for both of you ,yes i have thought of a well bred lab.i would love a black one named Cash.but how protective would he be.my son loves the woods and i would love to see him walk off with a dog behind him but i would think if a stranger walked up to them the lab would probably introduce him.i have never met a lab that didn't love everybody.

I have a black lab that would protect me in a heart beat. She will hold someone in a corner until I tell her okay. I also had a yellow lab as a child that if anyone came onto the property, he would (carefully) grab them by the arm and hold them until we told him it was okay. Dogs can sense when a person is good or bad, and there have been many stories of non aggressive animals protecting their owners.

The best dog breeds in the world for pets, children and playfullness are typically trainable and love atttention and other animals; Labs, retrievers, and there are several colors available of both breeds. I am a foster rescure for labs and retrievers and never met a dog in either breed that was agressive, the dogs I have fostered have come from all kinds of predicaments and different ages as well. Personally I LOVE chocolate labs and golden retriever, retriever shed more. Gppd luck and choose wisley look at rescues too because you can get a pure bred dog neutered and vet checvked at a very resonable price....and they all deserve lovng homes.

A lab or a golden wouldnt be at all protective. A chesapeake, on the other hand, wouldnt let anyone mess with those kids! I love my cheesy-peek!

100% agree. there have been several very successfully trained Chessies on the SchH books and beyond. I have always respected them in the field dog group because they are so dual purpose!

I had a Bouvier Des Flanders a lot of years ago. She was a super dog with a great personality and temperment.

Have you considered a Standard Poodle? I've never had one but I like what I know of them.

I have a very good friend that breeds Rough Collies. She breeds with strict attention to health and temperament. She has had many repeat customers. I know she has a lot of people that have 2 or more of her collies.

I don't know what her plans are this year as to breeding and it is possible she won't breed this year at all. She has nice Collies. Two Collies she bred owned by different people were used in the Collie Brown Trout Calender for 2012.
