for a rescue, go with a group that does fostering. You can adopt a dog that has been living in a home with children. I mean, you could adopt a puppy that grows up to detest children. What do you do then? With a rescue, at least you know going in if the dog has a history of being used to children.

For that matter, it is feasible that a particular dog could love every child on Earth but yours... Again, all are individuals. If you are looking for a particular breed, a breed specific rescue is a good option.

I would never adopt an adult dog if i had kids... way to many risks for me.
Just my opinion...
Although i know many people do do it with NO problems...

I once did, (and wont do it again) a sweet great dane...
He was raised with 6 (SIX! lol) kids... and he was very gentle and patient with them...I saw this in person.
But at my house... he growled at one of my foster kids when the kid called him to come (the dog was sitting beside me, he had become quickly attached to me

)... thats was it... bye bye Ares. Even though he really was a really good sweet gentle dog. He had SOME issue somewhere that happend... I called the lady to see what it could be... WHAT happend in his life?... she denied everything... "oh he never did that heeeeere"...

He found a good home with a dane lover. And is a spoiled big man today...
Lesson learned for me.... i want to know EVERYTHING that happens in my dogs puppyhood and history....

ETA: I dont know,..i just have bad luck with everything...

Here are some to check out:
Weimaraner- mine was very protective of all kids and me. Good watchdog and pal. My neices and nephews could do ANYTHING to her as small kids. My brother went to get on to his kids(raised his voice and went to grab one of them) that were piled up on Shadow and she looked right at him and showed her teeth, looked at his son licked him on the cheek and went back to playing and protecting her kids. My dad spoke up and told my brother to leave them alone, nobody will mess with any of my grandkids with Shadow on the job.

English Pointer- also very protective of kids and a great buddy. Had as a kid mom and dad could not correct us in front him. He would protect us.

Chessie- more of the same.

One of the pros to all of them, also a hunting buddy. Easy coat care. Can handle the heat. You have ACD so one of these will be do-able....

that isn't a "child aggression" issue. That is the dog deciding that he owned YOU and that he wasn't going to let someone separate him from his possession. Also, as I said, some dogs just don't like some people. A growl is just a warning. The only way a dog has of saying "I don't want you to bother me, leave me alone"

When you have a dog the size of a great dane it is a child aggression issue. Every family dog we have ever had would rather have children poke them in the eye or shove cherrios up the dogs nose rather then ever display any sign of aggression to a child.


There are dozens of cute happy sweet shelter dogs for every nasty one. Sorry but in my honest opinion if all shelters had the honestly and morality they would put down every even slightly aggressive animal and it would make so much room for the good dogs.Then people like me would be so much less hesitant about getting a shelter dog in the first place.


Also she said foster children, now no one wants their own children in any danger, but foster kids makes that more so. You do not want foster kids you love going back into the system. A child mentioning a growling dog would be all it takes around here.

I'll stand by my comment that growling in and of itself is NOT aggressive. It's merely a communication. I never said it was wrong to take the dog back - I have kids as well and they come first. Just pointing out that a growl can mean anything from "I'm sleepy and wish I could take a nap so leave me alone" to "I don't like you and I'll tear you apart if you come closer" For that matter, growling can mean "You are a stranger and I'm scared of you"

I agree, and would also add that children need to be taught not to poke dogs and shove cheerios up their noses, and be supervised to make sure they dont do tose things. A dog who growls at a child over those kind of things is being benevolent and appropriate.

I actually almost got a dog of this mix from some people in GA last year...I am sure it is the same people...I would not consider for family. The parents were not "friendly" to me.Kinda sketchy acting and I backed out.Nice place,gorgeous dogs,personalities were iffy.I have a rotti...my second one(first one was by my side 12 years) and both have been great family dogs and Gator is good with the chicks and horse. He is not my farm dog though as most people fear his breed.I have an aussie mix with catahoula for that. Great potential already and stays with kids well. I dont have the acreage to satify a pyr! Gator is my couch dog!
