Does anyone know what a really popular breed is?

Hi I’m looking to start breeding but not sure what are popular breeds. Can anyone help me out?
Hi there, hope you are enjoying BYC! :frow

I could sell Silkies all day long, all year, as fast I could hatch them for $10 each straight run... or more depending on color.. some go for even higher. BUT the key is breeding quality and not multiplying crud.

However, each location may vary to which preferences they have. Silkies were NOT the breed for ME... and it ain't worth it if you don't LOVE the breed you're working with... at least on hobby status as I am, where the all mighty $ is NOT my bottom line.

To me Rocks are better birds than Orps...

I suggest checking you local Craigslist farm and garden section... and go with something that's not already flooding your market. Choosing more rare color varieties that are harder to find of a popular breed might be a good choice.. like partridge instead of barred Rocks. If I was going with Orpington I would go with gold laced or better Isabella over buff or lavender.. Something that ISN'T commonly available sexed at feed stores for $3.

If you have patrons who will be needing pullets only and can't have roosters... an auto sexing breed like cream legbar that lays blue eggs might be nice. I just recently starting raising Bielefelder.. but for ME and not for the market.

French black copper Marans and Lavender Orpington are good examples of what USED to be somewhat rare and very popular... now they are available at SOOO many hatcheries... there is NOTHING rare about them.... other than TRUE SOP quality.

Adding your general location to your profile can help folks make the best suggestions possible at a glance. ;)

Please tell... are you chicken experienced already... or jumping all in at once? If you are in the US will be looking to get NPIP certified so you can legally ship hatching eggs and chicks if so desired?:pop

Best wishes on your adventure! :wee

Marans, Olive Eggers, & Cream Legbars seem to be popular at present time. The old standbys like Barred Rocks, Rhode Island Reds, and Gold & Silver Laced Wyandottes have stood the test of time as well.
