Does anyone know where to find the rare Onagadori?

After some overly extensive researching about care and up keep and diet and housing and all types of things, I realized that I am just way to poor to own one of these magnificent birds. Perhaps one day I will win the Lottery and then I can have some?

Thank you everyone for your input, I feel this is a great thread to share information and knowledge about these rare and gorgeous birds, it helps people understand them and everything it takes to care for them. Thank you everyone so much for sharing all your info of the Onagadori .

Beanbag, you can get a Phoenix. They don't require the same type of special care and are related to the Onagadori. Their tails aren't as long, but they do drag on the ground like a bridal train! I had one several years ago; he was beautiful!

Dont just give up on the line. They are well worth it. I dont have tails that are super long on all my roos because they run the yard. You dont have to keep them where the tails are really long. You try to get a roo that doesnt molt out tail feathers for at least 3 years & you work w/it. But you can still raise them. I dont have mine on any special diet--Unless laying mash & walmart wild bird feed is special. They are wonderful birds w/great personalities. They are well worth raising. I also say if you want a bird that get really long tail feathers you can go the Samatra way--They also have the quaility of the 3 spurs on each leg some 4. But I will ALWAYS pick an Onagadori over any of the other long tails any day of the week just because of the personalities--They follow me like little dogs. Really sweet chickens.

Anyone that can keep chickens can raise Phoenix. This rooster is one of my "phoenix" broodcocks.
He is not perfect but I like him. He is 3/4 Phoenix and a tad of Grey Junglefowl and a tad of Ceylon Junglefowl.
I actually have several of his sisters for sale right now. nice quality birds, I am just moving in another direction at this time

Edit to say I live in Georgia, probably too far for you to come get any birds.
And that always notice saddle length when breeding birds and/or buying broodstock. Dont forget that.

Yes. They are hard to come by since now that they had became popular through the helps of forums and groups who breed to preserve the rare trait (myself included) and advertisement that some people actually decided to call their longtails "Onagadori" rather than "Phoenix" in which they really have.

The PROPER term should be "American Onagadori" since Onagadori should only be used for Japanese full bloodline birds. The ones we have here in the U.S.A are NEVER 100% Onagadori and has a little bit of game chicken or phoenix in them. Bitty girl is correct to who has the "BEST" lines in America...and that is from Mr. Cy Hyde. He is also a good friend of mine and we do chat often (on the phone - not an internet person).

I currently am working with the best that he had given me. I have the Silver Duckwing, Red Duckwing, Golden Duckwing and White American Onagadoris. Those are the FOUR standard colors and anything outside of that is most likely crossed.

With 350 birds to choose from!!!, he gave me 3 of his BEST ones in which he actually decided to keep and not sell to anyone since they carry the non-molting gene the strongest from his knowledge through "selective" breeding from "nm gene" parents so there you have it.

To no surprize, their tails do grow fast and stay on long! Within the first year, I had gotten 3-4 ft. tails. Not estimates!
