Does 'Doing the Deed' Mean eggs soon?

I'm just wondering, because Stumpy is now having his way with a few of the ladies - does this mean anything other than he's ready? Are there any female pheromones that tell him which one to have a private moment with? Seriously, stop laughing!

I dunno, I'm new at this rooster stuff!

About 4-5 weeks after I noticed mine mating, they started to lay.

No need for "Stumpy" to be around to get eggs. He is probably just trying to live up to his name . . . Opps, LOL.

I believe he can tell though, which ones are old enough and ready to start laying.

Oh Reinbeau, seems like just last year you were just a young, innocent chickenkeeper wannabe. Now you're older, more mature and struggling with significant gender-related issues. Is this as fun as you thought it would be?

(PS: I think it's just that the roo is ready and would have his way with your foot if a hen weren't around...)

the cockrels mature sooner than the pullets will. you'll also notice at first they're terrible at mating. They'll pull out feathers, grab the hens by the comb, romp on their heads, etc. They'll get much better with practice, though.

From what I've read around here sometimes the rooster really does love his owner too much!
