I don't want to offend anyone but I read alot about people here that love silkies and I don't think they are all that cute. I know they are great mothers and great chickens. I guess I am more of a traditional cleaned legged chicken person. Silkies just look a little wierd to me...no offense meant. I am just wondering if I am alone in my thinking or am I the wierd one? Please dont hurt me too bad:/

Ummm....funny that you should mention this. I was JUST...literally JUST having a conversation of the same subject about Silkies with a friend...I'm sure some folks think mine aren't all that attractive, either, though!!

Not everyone likes silkies and the way they look. The only reason I'm fond of them is because of their fur-like appearance... they look like two legged kittens.

Then again, I've seen die-hard anti-silkie people see one in person and they can't resist their charms.

I don't think I would ever be diehard against any chicken...we have to stick together. I do underdstand the furry look now that you mention it. Good point. Keep the thoughts and opinions coming.

While I love feathered feet, I am not a fan of silkies. I love the look and feel of normal feathers . . . for some reason it doesn't feel good to pet a silkie. Plus I'm not keen on any chicken sporting a "hat." I always wind up with blind chickens when I get crested breeds, and it's a bleeding hassle.

My reasons for disliking silkies are exactly why my SO loves the breed more than anything else, so of course I keep a few for him to enjoy. To each their own.

Nope. Not even faintly impressed or intrigued by fancy fowl. I think standard breeds are beautiful. I like both beautiful AND useful animals. If they aren't good for laying and eating, I'm not real interested.

I owned 2 black silkies for about a month. They got picked on by my standards so I had them separated in a small pen. They always looked dusty and their feathered feet didn't stay clean. They had no purpose in my flock. They weren't laying eggs yet. I ended up giving them to a friend who loves silkies and had lost her flock to coons. Well. . .the coon issue isn't fixed, so one of the black silkies is no more.

I'll stick to the standard chicken breeds.

I love tophat breeds (especially the more full they are), most frizzles (depending on what breed it's in), and most silkies (the fuzzier, the better). However, I'm not a big fan of show girls or naked necks. I really like muffed breeds, but clean, non-ornamented breeds are great too! Gotta love the traditional looking chickens. OEGB's are probably my all time favorites, and there's nothing all that fancy about them. However, I AM a sucker for crazy and pretty colors. I love, love, LOVE colors. A lot of times it's the color and pattern that catches my eye, and not so much the overall look of the chicken.
I race homing pigeons, which can also come in some beautiful and unique colors...but if you want good race results, you can't go breeding birds that are just 'pretty'. Therefore, I get my color madness out by breeding pretty chickens!
