Candling is AWESOME... lol

once you candle a fertile egg & end up seeing whats inside & whats going on it is so unbelievable how you can really see the progress of a chick actually developing & so quickly. I can tell by day 3 if their fertile usually but I check again to be sure after a few more days before tossing. }}}Also my eggs so far have been white or very light color.~Chicken & Duck eggs. And if its your 1st time candling, providing you can see through the shell, you will know if you have a fertile egg or not cuz its an obvious thing that you see. My 1st time candling, I had so many ??s but all my eggs at first ended up NOT being fertile so thought I was missing the picture. When I Finally had fertile eggs it was obvious when there were the red veins ect.... Any ways.... I look forward to candling its better than going Shopping or to the Casino. LOL ok maybe that went a little over board.

I agree with the poster who said (paraphrasing) no stink bombs please! I've had one egg go bad on me and pwhew did it smell! I don't want one like that exploding on good, healthy eggs. I candle at day 9 and day 18. By day 9 you definitely know what's fertile, what's quit (blood rings) and what's "clear". I candle one more time at lockdown to see if I have any more obvious quitters before I boost the humidity and make the environment even more inviting for bacteria, etc. in "dead" eggs ...

What about shipped eggs? Do you candle to see cracks or lose air sacs? What I am looking for? I have 38 eggs from three different sellers. I could not see any cracks but wonder about the air sacs and how long I should wait to begin turning. First time with shipped eggs.
Thanks!
Denise

I candle at day 7, and day14. reason being, if no progress is there I can reload. I you have never experenced the joy of an eggplosion then trust me you don't want to. It only takes one and you have far more problems than you wanted. Good luck.

I candle, no matter the darkness of the eggs. Marans eggs especially.

As for shipped eggs - wait a minimum 12 hours before you set them so that the aircell settles. When candling for cracks, look for lines of bright color, as if the light is shining through the egg quite well.

WE candle for a couple of reasons.

The incubators are plumb full, so if I candle I can take out anything not developing, thus more room for more eggs.

We also candle just to check fertility, for us, we have multiple breeding pens, and want to make sure fertility is good. We were having problems with one of our araucana pens, and were able to take action to get fertility back on track sooner using candling as a tool.

If things are normal, I will not candle, set it and forget it yields good results.

We just hatched 6 eggs out of 6 laid, 100% beautiful! We did not candle; we let nature take its course. We did not handle the eggs at all.

We have candled both our Dominique chicken eggs and our Ancona duck eggs. Our duck eggs are very easy to see through so we are able to tell which are good and which are not. Our chicken eggs however are very dark and we were not able to see through them to tell. We had thought that might be they were bad but after 28 days we hatched all but one egg!! I would just hold out you may be surprised by good results even if you can't see anything!!!
