Does the hen know that when she starts sitting that chicks will come?

I always wanted to know if the hen that starts sitting knows that she’s going to have to raise these eggs that will be live chickens soon.

I think not. I once had a mule duck hen make a nest and incubate 4 apples. She was operating out of instinct not knowledge of what was to come - apple pie.
