Hello everyone!

I’m new to raising chicks myself, but I’ve grown up around chicks so when one of my babies started getting pasty butt, I treated it with warm water like I was taught. A few of my chicks had pasty butt as well, and after being cleaned once or twice, it resolved itself. This one chick though seems to be a bit behind developmentally than its siblings, (its feathers are just starting to peek through when the rest have wings that are mostly feathered now at about 3-4ish weeks). This chick also has what looks like a “chapped” vent, but otherwise poops, eats, and drinks normally and doesn’t show any signs of not feeling well.

Should I put some coconut oil on its vent or something to help? I feel bad because it looks painful! I haven’t had to clean this chick in about a week either, and when I did I made sure to be gentle and to now pull feathers so I’m just a bit worried about her behind.

I have one as we speak that I'm putting coconut oil on. Mine's solid so I melt a small amount of it and rub it on it's rump.

First, I sit its butt in a small dish of warm water for a minute to soak the poop off, then use a paper towel to get anything that didn't come off and dry it with a blow dryer on low.

If you have any type of probiotics for their water, I would give them that every other day for a week or so as that usually clears up digestive issues. I give all mine probiotics about once a week via fermented grains. A little plain yogurt, preferably Greek, works too.
