Where did you get them?

Feed stores order their birds from a hatchery. If you breed 2 hatchery quality birds together, their offspring will be hatchery quality. They have the same general look, but have some faults. Hatcheries generally breed for production and the standard type of the bird suffers as a result. The only sure way to get good exhibition quality birds is to order from a private breeder. There is nothing "wrong" with hatchery birds, and you may be still be able to show them at county fairs, but at an APA show, you may get your heart broken. Good luck with them!

Completely true.
while it won't burn a hole through your wallet to get hatchery birds, in the long run you'll make what you spent and more back if you get to the point of selling and hatching eggs.
Showing hatchery birds at a big show=not a particularily good idea. You know, first impressions and everything. Some show people live entirely around their birds and can be snobby and rude to new people.
So stick around here and let us show you where to get some good birds and teach you up before you go and blow us all out of the water at the shows

Wow love all the great pictures it is much easier to see the good and bad when it is shown in pictures. We are looking at expanding our standard cochin flock and would really like to buy show quality birds/eggs but so far have had trouble finding much. I know maybe it is probably just a little early and I am at the point where if I start hatching chicks maybe spring will appear as well

Does anyone know of a good place to find a list of shows for the year? We have a local fair but I did not see a single Cochin there this year. I am in Washington just outside of Spokane and would love to find some shows close by Washington, Oregon, Idaho.

Try www.cochinsrule.com

Personally I would suggest Matts or Roebuck. Or Sherry Humphreys as she took over Karl Rau's cochin flock.

But be prepared to pay as much as $50 a bird or more, it might help if you're a 4-Her. Just try sending out a few e-mails and see what you get back
