I am new to chickens. Built a chicken tractor and purchased 5 chicks. One of the older chicks, probably about 5 weeks old has red eyes and kind of blurry looking. No other symptoms, that I can tell(sneezing, coughing, etc.) I did some research and think it might be CRD. But I am a newbie.

Also, can someone verify what breeds these chicks are?

Thanks for your help!!

I think they look very much like my new Golden Buff pullets. They are known by other names too like Red Star and Gingernut Ranger. They are hybrid red sex links. I'm sorry I can't help
with the red eye. Hope she gets well quick.

I would put some antibiotic ointment in her eye. I don't think it looks respiratory. You can use neosporin, without pain meds, or, Terramycin. You can find it at most feed stores.

So, you don't think it is respiratory? I would be happy if it is not CRD, but it makes me wonder with those watery runny eyes.

You can't tell for sure what they have by looking at it. Could be CRD, could be something else.

I do NOT recommend starting your chicken keeping hobby with a sick flock, not ever. They can not be cured of CRD, and yes, that is possibly what it is, but can't be certain. That leaves them carriers for life. I'd cull them, disinfect and get some healthy birds, if you think that's what it is. Could be a sinus deal with the one symptomatic one, but if they all start getting the symptoms, it's contagious.

I wanted to add that in the future, if a bird starts showing anything like this, separate it from the rest, disinfect all feeders and waterers and observe that one and the flock. If that one gets worse, euthanize it, and watch the rest for symptoms. That way, you may protect the others from anything contagious. Antibiotics cannot cure a carrier disease like CRD or Coryza.
