Does this mean I have a roo

Quote:
This sounds EXACTLY like my 2 1/2 week old Buff Orpington chick. She was picked on terribly by Meanie, the eye pecker, when they were very little and so got a lot of hand holding and loving. She was so, so sweet and never ran from me. Now, when I reach in the brooder she runs and peeps loudly. She's also jumped at my hand and is always attacking the other chicks. I was going to post about it this morning because they woke us up at 2am with god-awful peeping and crying and fighting. There are five in there and they are fighting a lot now. Is this just establishing the pecking order? The Buff O, Miss Peeps, jumps up and attacks all the other birds (especially those close to her size) with her feet and goes after them anytime they have something she wants. I was beginning to suspect a roo because her comb is huge compared to all the others, but not red, and now this behaviour!

Should I keep them all together and just let them sort it out? So far noone has been hurt. They are definitely going to the garage though, as I am exhausted from being woken up!

If you are planning on keeping HIM

, I would try to start putting him in his place now when he acts like that. Hold him alot, if you have kids, have them hold him alot.It might be okay now, but when he is a big roo, he can do some damage!!

Enjoy!

kodiakchicken - I have never seen any of them picking on each other or pecking each other - only the odd chest butting but even that is only when I get them all out to have a bomb around and I think this is just excitement and playing. I always try to give them things to do - like bury bits of food in their shavings and putting new objects in with them - do you think yours might be bored and that's why they are pecking each other, seems really young at only 2 1/2 weeks, I have read posts about chicks doing this if kept in small places with nothing to do?

tiffanyh - unfortunately I cannot keep HER if she is a roo

I'm praying she's not (I do have a home for him if he is though) - SHE does like to be held - it's just that first thing in the morning when she pecks my hand and only this one morning when she did the feet thing?

thanx again everybody

I'm really really hoping Chrystal is a girl - she's sat on my knee now and every time i put her back she jumps out (i've left the door open) and comes to me - Fingers crossed she's an exception to the rule too - and I've forgiven her for pecking me and she hasn't done it once since i posted this - i think she's sorry lol
