Chickens are funny that way. I have lots of nest options near an easy to access egg door, but they all love the "egg attic", the storage shelf I put in the roof of the coop. they hijacked it. I let them.

I have a spot also kinda like that....they haven't found it yet

Fingers crossed! They are smart little critters.
Mine is not so easy to get to. I have to stoop and kinda contort to get in there. I intended to use it to store the chick brooding kit. Oh well, at least I know where to look for eggs and it's easy for my son to reach. That gives me a reason to give him the chore of egg gathering.
