I've seen people use dog crates as pigeon cages, Opinions?

(I'm not thinking about doing this, I just want to know peoples opinion on this!)

I've done it before. I was fostering some pigeons for a rescue group and they actually recommended this (although one was missing a wing). They do still recommend pigeons should have flight time outside of the cage (ceiling fans off, no doors or windows open) so they can stretch their wing muscles.

Would this work for racing pigeons? The cage obv only being for sleeping

I couldn't tell you, I only briefly housed some feral pigeons (both had bands) of the "normal" variety. I don't imagine it would be an issue, especially if it's just for sleeping.
If it's going to be outside then you'd need to wrap the cage in 1/4 hardware cloth.
