I did do the vensin diet food-grain free-hershey squirts the whole month:( I've tried 7? different types of grain free food...So far nothing has really done well for him...

Called vets and waiting for a call back-I told them Im stopping this med that makes him vomit--and they said they would accept the unopened box back-in the mean time I have written all these questions down for him to talk to me about and see if he'll write a scrip for the royal canine. the tech said since he wont be on the pills I should really think about the allergy testing-I said Yes I ma and have thought about it. BUT I'm trying one more thing before doing the testing -which is the new food. Also, Dh and I talked this morning and we are ripping out ALL carpets from the house and replacing with hard wood floors alot sooner than expected. It's breaking his heart thinking it could be something in the carpets that the cleaners aren't getting out. So Im happy for the new floors..sorta.. its an expense we were not counting on this year but hey if its something we were going to do anyway-why not now while were trying everything else?

Well searching the royal canine wesite I learned my petsmart an hour away carries that brand NOT that kind..So It is back to internet shopping to get it shipped to me...

pips&peeps :

Have you called around to other veterinarians who may carry it?

working on it now:) So far I found a website that carries it-( its not offered in alot of places-even the ones who carry that brand?? $81.67 shipped for a 27 lb bag....There's one other vet Im calling now. All the others are saying 95-100$ a bag

REALYY??? good grief. LOL

pips&peeps :

Yep, try feeding a lab and two schnauzers that....... no more doggies after these guys!

thats what Im saying-My chihuahua will have to eat it too but he doesnt eat but 1/2 cup a day?? So I'm lucky there. One 27lb bag will last a month here-or abouts so thats not bad...I'd rather do that and spend that kind of $ if it works, Than give shots and/or clean up vomit!

have you considered home cooked meals? It may end up being cheaper in the long run than the expensive prescription food. Also, if this were my dog I would not use an oatmeal shampoo on him. Think about it, you are feeding him grainfree food to avoid allergies, why would you apply them to the skin? He has yeast issues, oatmeal is the last thing you want to apply, we're not baking bread here! I would suggest a hypoallergenic shampoo with no scent. You can also do a sugar scrub on him when you're bathing him, just take regular white sugar, scrub it on to his skin after you've applied the shampoo and let it soak on a few minutes. Scrub really well between all his toes. Sugar has a lot of healing properties, and this also helps exfoliate his skin to help clear up any sort of yeast funkiness he has going on. You also may want to look into mud baths. http://www.hampinaturalpetspa.com/default.asp these products are really nice and we have had good results with them in our grooming salon. The allergy testing would be a good investment, that way it takes a lot of the guessing out and it will save you money in the long run.

I'm dealing with some of the same in my dog. I feel your fustration

My dog has THE most sensitive flea allergy, and we've a Florida yard full of fleas all the wandering neighbors animals keep bringing over and feeding

Had my puppy on topical prevention from the start, but come spring, he was itching like crazy! Vet gave him the steroids, a calming shampoo, a spray... and each of those thing helped a little bit.. but as soon as a flea jumped on and bit him before it died... he's back to going batty scratching, nibbling, chewing on himself.

I had to stop with the steroids. Couldn't imagine giving those this whole time like the vet was pushing.

I was talking about my dogs issues with a lady the other day, she just works at a vet, but anyway.. she suggested that the scabs on his back are from a secondary infection due to all the irritation. The bacteria will be making him itchy too. So getting the right antibiotic until the scabs and sores are all healed up is what I am trying to do for my boy now. I actually bought a $5 bottle of Hotspot topical gel in our local grocery store (!!!) that if I remember to put on him before bedtime.. he will sleep the night through with no itching.

I also saw something on Petmeds I'm really thinking of ordering... it's just that something else we need for the other pups is over on Dr. Foster & Smith.. I do so hate ordering from multiple sites.. but anyway, this stuff sounds really good. It's just Yucca extract. There are really, really good reviews on it as helping dogs with allergies and stuff. You can use it topically or feed it to them.
