I thought of this too and will cut back his baths to see if it helps and let his fur grow back-after today--he's getting a bath since he has stopped scratching so much-and now his scabs are just there drying out and such. I want to get rid of it flaking off

Your right purina is full of things....Let me go out to the car and see what I hve-I forgot the name..."Taste of the wild with roasted lamb".. I have stayed awya from all chicken products and I did do the sweet potato kind--hershey squirts worse than ever. I dont like science diet or Iams-not to say they are not great for folks-just not for me....I'll look into the kind you use....I do have a chihuahua thats has to eat the same kind that Noah does because I am NOT buying two different kinds and keep them seperated! LOL Thank you for your help!

a shampoo with Tea Tree Oil was what my vet recommended for my dog that got fleas at the pet sitters. He was horribly allergic, even 1 bite could send him into itching fits. He would scratch until he was bleeding. Oatmeal is good for re-hydrating dry skin, but I got better results with tea tree.

TOTW is a good food, too rich for Rayden. Gave him the runs. When you switch foods, always do it over the course of a week or 2, mixing a little more with his old food every couple days.

A gentle brushing is a good way to get rid of the loose flaking skin without taking the risk of drying the skin out farther with a bath. Do it a couple times a day, lightly so you don't pull any scabs. You can also get one of those little gloves with the bumps on it, that will massage the skin and you have greater control of how much pressure you are using vs a brush. The brushing will help stimulate the natural oils in the skin as well.

Oh, the TOTW wild food you are feeding has sweet potato, so the issue probably wasn't with them but something else in the food. Or just being switched too fast

What time of day do you give him his pill so it doesnt make him vomit? and then what time do you feed him?

If it were me I would put him on a raw diet and see how that goes. Just start out with a little ball of raw ground beef and if that stays down (and in) give several small (golf ball size) of ground beef , chicken or pork throughout the day, a few hours apart so he doesnt think he is starving to death.

Then next day, start mixing in a little grated carrot and zuccini with plain yoghurt. Then try it with eggs, cottage cheese, brown rice and so on. NO kibble during this trial.
Then research raw diet, and take it from there adding ingredients as you go
But if he does well on it don't forget to include raw bones and then you won't have to pay for teeth cleaning either.

Worth a try eh? I feel bad for you at the expense of those pills and him being sick all the time....there must be a better way

I had a cocker spaniel and a lab/bulldog mix on a raw food diet and they were able to go medicine and best of all VET free. He dang near killed the lab with steroids and crap. In a month's time his hair had grown back, no more throwing up and best of all he quit chewing his body till it bled. The book you need is Natural Health for Dogs and Cats by Richard Pitcairn. You will be amazed. It was so nice to be free of constant vet bills. Some dogs just cannot eat that crap they put in bags. Until you get the book I second the post that said feed bits of raw meat and no more comercial feed. My cocker lived to be 22 1/2 years old before she died. The lab is now 15.

I'd go the allergy testing route. Being sick from meds is going to be just as bad as the allergies.
I have dogs that can't eat lamb - at all.
Proteins can be just as much an issue as the grains.

After feeding raw for a while to determine what was causing my dogs their issues, we were able to find a kibble that worked for them - mine do well with some grains, but one could not do wheat. Food issues are a lot of trial and error, but that much of an allergic reaction would indicate something else is causing issues (or lots of somethings). I'd just spring for the allergy testing at this point to figure out what it is.

He eats first thing in morning-then at 4:30ish when i get home. I give his meds around 4 hours past his last feeding, when his food is typically past the post of vomiting it up! SO far this strtegy has worked best..for now:( We are all gone from 7:30 am until 4:30 pm...So I can't give it to him throughout the day:( I will research that type of diet. I did at one point feed him fresh chicken and brown rice-for about a month?? It was ok but again So time consuming keeping up with that diet and since I didnt see a real change. I gave up and started right into grain free..I do take about 2 weeks to switch over his food-gradually so as not to really mess him up. I've been going crazy researching and such and get such mixed ideas from what it seems to be the best of the best in the canine world...This is the first animal in 25+ years I've owned my own pets that has any issue of any kind so this is all new to me....It has really put the halt to ever wanting another indoor pet. I think that is why we are going gung ho to do whatever it is he needs to get better and as healthy as we can get him. thanks guys!!

Get him off the grains. See if you can get him some Royal Canin HP 19, it's a bit expensive, but will work.

Thanks Jean-I'll look that up too. Honestly, I'd rather him be put on some type of great dog food that will help tremedously than raw feed and such-yup for selfish reasons.

BUT I will do whatever it takes for him to get better. I can't imagine that food is any more expensive that what he's costing now!
