DOG ALLERGIC TO EVERYTHING-meds making him vomit:( UPDATE 11/5/11

My cat is allergic to almost everything on this earth and he eats the Royal Canin HP 23. I spent the $ on the testing because he was scratching himself until he was bloody.

When my dog kept having skin issues for over a year which included constant ear infections, I switched him to the Royal Canin also.

His skin and ears cleared up within about 10 days and he gained 17 pounds in about two months. He is not overwieght, he was just thin before. I think it was because his body was unable to digest the food he was eating. His bowl is kept full at all times and he does not overeat. Before spending $ on the allergy tests please try the Royal Canin and see what happens.

SO true!! I will Jean thank you!
I'm going to try this food I bought yesterday first and see what happens ( since I can't return it:( ) If it does nothing for him then thats what I will buy next...while researching the whole time the raw food diet too...

you know what? forget it! Im returning what I bought yesterday-its not open so I can't imagine they wouldnt take it back--Just looked up what the royal canine says it works for and it appears ( to me) that this might be the next dog food for me and him:) All my options are open at this point but tht dog food seems to fit him better at this point.

I do not have a local dog food store locally that carries it so I will have to have it shipped to me:( Where do you get yours from Jean?

Hi, I had to respond to this because I know it all too well. I've had two dogs with severe allergies. The first was a Springer Spaniel. I tried it all and finally opted to put him on Prednisone. Yes, the vet says it damages their liver, but I felt that quality over quantity was the best for my dog since dogs don't have a concept of time. He lived to be 14 without itching and being miserable!!!

Dog number two was a Shepherd mix that developed allergies to her own stomach lining mid life. Yep, you heard right. After doing oral chemo we put her on a bland diet. She didn't really seem to enjoy life and I often regretted making the decision to keep her going. We brought in a cat, not sure how the dogs would handle it, and she bonded with the cat. They played together, slept together .....she really seemed to have fun her last year.

I get my meds from http://www.diamondbackdrugs.com You have to give them your vet information the first time you call and they'll keep it on file. I just phone a refill line thereafter. They're great to work with and half the price of what I pay at the vet.

I know how frustrating it is to watch a pet suffer and feel absolutely helpless. Sounds like your vet doesn't know if your dog is allergic to food or the environment. I knew someone that spend thousands trying to figure out what their dog was allergic to and finally discovered it was the sheepskin that it slept on! I'd try a good food http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com Personally, I'd ask the vet to put the dog on Predisone. I always treat my dogs the way I'd want to be treated. I rather live a few years less and be comfortable then spend all my years crawling out of my skin.

You have to get it with a prescription. You can order it online or get it from a vet.

yup just about to post that I need a scrip... calling vets now!

When starting with dog foods I'd start with boiled chicken and rice. From there try one good food at a time. You can't use prescription food like Science Hill's Z/D or R/D because it's not meant for long term use. Be sure that any prescription diet you go with can be used for the life of the dog, otherwise in 6 mos. you'll be in the same boat that you are now. I'd try something with a venison meat base, it's supposed to be easier on them. Next would be something with a fish base. Dogs are typically allergic to grains and egg so stick to the high quality (meat or meat by products) in the first five ingredients. Barley over wheat.

One of my co-workers adopted a "thrown away" bichon. He had hot spots all over and was diagonsed w/ multiple allergies. She had him tested after spending much money on different foods, shots etc. They found that the only thing he could eat was venison. Good thing her DH is an avid hunter. "Buddy" is at least 15yrs old now and still the boss of the family. He sure wound up in the perfect home.
