DOG ALLERGIC TO EVERYTHING-meds making him vomit:( UPDATE 11/5/11

Some good news...I drove the 45 minutes to vets and returned his unused meds...bonus. then drove to store and returned the 50$ bag of food I bought yesterday..my vet carries the food Jean suggested but not that formula..they will call Me Monday with an answer and price or a scrip to order it myself if their too expensive so a little progree I guess?

The last, final, and only option left is allergy testing...$300 to test--then for another $250 they will take the results and create a special allergy shot just for him. Then I have to give him shots every 3 weeks for life...Can you say drained out??? He's only 2 1/2!!!!

FWIW I did this for one of my horses. In his case he was allergic to oak trees, 3-4 different pine trees, bermudagrass, timothy, orchard grass, stall dust, etc--so many different things that they couldn't load all the stuff into one syringe. He had to get 2 shots at a time. But it worked. He was 15 when we started and lived to 25. He finally died of a cancer and not the allergy-induced COPD that we treated so long and hard for. When it works, it's like night and day in the quality of their lives.

Thank you! Glad you finally found what was ailing your horse and by the sounds of it-everything did! We live in the woods...very remotr so he has every kind of tree around him... The allergy testing is deffinately something I will do ..after I try this last thing for him...

I don't know if you're feeding chicken flavored dog food or anything with chicken in it, but you'd be surprised.

My Shih Tzu projectile vomits and explosive diarrhea with ANYTHING flavored chicken, chicken by-product...bone...ANYTHING.

The Lab can eat anything, but we have to be careful. If it makes him itch, he scratches...on everything. His poor ears are yeasty, and he'll lose hair.

We had him on Exclusive, he did well for awhile but started scratching, losing all sorts of hair and was just miserable. We've switched back to Authority (have to order online...yay) and he's mostly good, save for those ears. Vida throws up on any other food now.

Ah well...such is life!

I did not read all the posts, but my cousin had a Yorkie that was allergic to the world. They finally had to go to a canine allergist. They tested, came up with the shots and it worked. That dog went on to live a long allergy free life.

The benefit to the raw diet is that the meat has not been cooked and therefore has all the natural enzymes in it that nature intended for them to eat. My principal has a purebred bulldog that I just put on the raw food diet and she stopped throwing up that day. Within a week you could tell she felt better and had more energy. Within two weeks her skin started clearing and she doesn't have to have steroids any more. The food is very easy to prepare. I also is cheaper than the bagged special dog foods.

If you're hell-bent on feeding processed kibble, there is nothing unique about the Royal Canin HP, all the prescription pet food companies make at least one allergy formula (hydrolyzed protein) Hills = Z/D Purina = HA And contrary to what others may think, these are ALL designed to be fed indefinetly. Most people are also unaware that 85% of canine & feline allergies are environmental NOT food related. Food trials should be conducted for a MINIMUM of 6 weeks and the new food (prescription or prepared diet which consists of ONLY 1 novel protein and ONE novel carb source) should be fed exclusively for that time period, that means NO table food, NO milk-bones, NO pizza crusts, NO cat food, chicken scratch, hamster pellets NOTHING. If your dog is responding to ATOPICA, your dog is suffering from environmental allergies not food allergies. There are drugs designed to protect the stomach and reduce nausea from other medications, your vet should be able to offer these to you for your pet.

Look into the prey model of the RAW diet, I've heard of people who feed their dogs exclusively on whole rabbits, chicken or quail and the scraps of deer they hunt; no vegtables or potatoes or anything like that to deal with. You could try giving him some things that are known to help humans with allergies like local honey, raw milk, and apple cider vinager.

I also did not read all the posts... so, if I missed something excuse me.

My vet has always said "nothing Purina", period. But, I gather that you have changed the dog food with no improvement? I am sorry, this has to be difficult for everyone.

I can only suggest, balance cost with quality on the dry food... limited ingredients. There is a new one at Petsmart, they just added.. the canned food is very high, but the dry food is reasonable, I am sorry I don't remember the name.... I have only purchased it once and opened and poured it into a container.

The dry food at Costco seems to be a good quality when you read the ingredients, and it is much more reasonable in price. If a member, you can check it, read the ingredients list. And, there is one at Petco made by a company Whole Earth.. it's also pretty reasonable and good quality.

Please -- I think if you want to keep giving the pills, you should add yogurt to the diet, or probiotics of some sort. (Good ones are refridgerated and not cheap in pill form.) Buttermilk, Yucult, yogurt are all probiotics. Most dogs like yogurt. It settles the stomach and treats diarrhea if given regularly.

Good luck, I am sorry you are going through all this... I can't imagine the cost.
