The shot was never the issue, I am a hunter and can shoot to kill but that never crossed my mind...I just wanted to make sure it did not get my little dog.

I am still sad about the whole thing but it is what it is I guess.

In actuality I am a real *itch 95% of the time. I speak my mind, I tell you like it is whether you like it or not. I do not mince words. I live by my own motto of "I will hurt you with the truth but never destroy you with a lie". I have no tolerance for stupidity, drug abusers, alcohol abusers, animal abusers, wife beaters or child abusers. I would prefer to shoot them on sight and be rid of them. Except for sexual predators, those I have a special slow and very painful way to be rid of them, a bullet would be a waste of money and end it too quickly for them.

The good things about me...I am fiecely loyal, I can be given complete trust, I am extremely protective of those I love and consider friends, you always know exactly where you stand with me and you get exactly what you see with me. I am considered very cold by most people and not one to be crossed because I have a pitbull tenacity and do not give up...my clients always loved that but acquaintenances never did. I do not get mad but I will spend eternity waiting for the perfect moment to get even. I will forgive but never forget.

So, I dunno, you might want to rethink your position because I can be a real PITA. As I told my DH when he proposed. I am 8itch, I like things my way, I do not take orders, I do not answer to or report to you, I will not account for my whereabouts every second or each penny I spend and you will be with me only because I want you there not because I need you there. In exchange I will love you, always be faithful, loyal and always there for you no matter what and protect you with my life if necessary. Still want to get married? The foolish man said yes so I accepted his proposal...poor soul has never been the same since.

I can understand shooting the dog if the person is in danger or if it is a repeat offender and the owners have been warned if this is possible. If the dog is a knucklehead lab ect and is safe to approach, better to pack him off to the owner or the pound, so you can have a good and civil talk with the owners. Shooting the pet often makes it very hard to have a civil conversation with the owner due to the emotion involved.
I have a dog who has escaped once (the gate was left open by the meter reader), not due to negligence/stupidity on my part/escapist dog- but it could have been an accident in any event- not a stupid owner. I am SO grateful that he did not appear in a dog shooter's yard and chase livestock and ended in his death. My up the street neighbor called me after reading his collar, and I retrieved him. He chased her cat, but thankfully, she did not shoot him- but captured him and called me. Another neighbor has a repeat offender dog who comes onto my fenced property and chases my chickens, and has killed one. I am civil with my neighbor (I have not killed his dog), and have helped them find the escape route for their dog. They have reimbursed me for my losses. I think most people can be reasoned with, and it is better to have neighbors who get along. LEgally we can do things, but I think not killing is better IF possible, as I want my neighbors to return my dog to me and present me with a bill, rather than his body. A dangerous dog (ie one growling at ME is a different story). Most dogs will chase someone else's chickens/cats/sheep ect, but will respect a person.

Just don't cross me an mine! LOL!

You guys know what I think! And some dogs don't respect humans that are not their owners. That being said, our DD has replaced her shovel with a pitchfork, and is always within eyesight of her dad or I while she free ranges her feathered babies. Unfornunatly you just never know with some predators....or neighbors for that matter! Good job BTW!

I folllowed the law in my state..here it is read it.

609.095. Dogs declared public nuisance; public nuisance prohibited; presumption of noncompliance; complaints


(1) A dog is a public nuisance if it:

(a) Chases persons or vehicles on premises other than premises from which the keeper of the dog may lawfully exclude others;

(b) Damages or destroys property of persons other than the keeper of the dog;

(c) Scatters garbage on premises other than premises from which the keeper of the dog may lawfully exclude others;

(d) Trespasses on private property of persons other than the keeper of the dog;

(e) Disturbs any person by frequent or prolonged noises;

(f) Is a female in heat and running at large; or

(g) Is a potentially dangerous dog, but is not a dangerous dog as defined in ORS 609.098.

609.098. Maintaining dangerous dog defined

(1) As used in this section, "dangerous dog" means a dog that:

(a) Without provocation and in an aggressive manner inflicts serious physical injury, as defined in ORS 161.015, on a person or kills a person;

(b) Acts as a potentially dangerous dog, as defined in ORS 609.035, after having previously committed an act as a potentially dangerous dog that resulted in the keeper being found to have violated ORS 609.095; or

(c) Is used as a weapon in the commission of a crime.

(2) A person commits the crime of maintaining a dangerous dog if the person is the keeper of a dog and the person, with criminal negligence, fails to prevent the dog from engaging in an act described in subsection (1) of this section.

609.125. "Livestock" defined


As used in ORS 609.135 to 609.190, "livestock" means ratites, psittacines, horses, mules, jackasses, cattle, llamas, alpacas, sheep, goats, swine, domesticated fowl and any fur-bearing animal bred and maintained commercially or otherwise, within pens, cages and hutches

609.150. Destruction of dog that harms or chases livestock, exemptions

(1) Except as provided in subsection (3) of this section, any dog, whether licensed or not, which, while off the premises owned or under control of its owner, kills, wounds, or injures any livestock not belonging to the master of such dog, is a public nuisance and may be killed immediately by any person. However, nothing in this section applies to any dog acting under the direction of its master, or the agents or employees of such master.

(2) If any dog, not under the control of its owner or keeper, is found chasing or feeding upon the warm carcass of livestock not the property of such owner or keeper it shall be deemed, prima facie, as engaged in killing, wounding or injuring livestock.

(3) No person shall kill any dog for killing, wounding, injuring or chasing chickens upon a public place, highway or within the corporate limits of any city.








As for earning respect of a strange dog...it did not respect me yelling for it to stop or go home, it did not respect being hit with a brick I threw at it so respect for person was not in the dog's ability and guess what...letting it kill my dog in my yard was not within my ability either.

You give the same advice to anyone here that kills a predator and make no mistake a dog after chickens or another animal is a predator and just because you will allow someone's dog to kill your chicken does not mean anyone much less everyone else, must follow your dictate or path.

I shot the dog, I felt bad and still feel bad about it. I spoke to Speckledhen on the phone about this for awhile this very morning and ya know what...she is right. I am upset because I have a heart and love for animals and killing them is not something I relish. I am not a pet killer. But, Iwill do so if it threatens my pets on my property. Period!

LOL My MIL has been trying to get us to move to Pembroke for 4 years. LOL DH spent his teen years in Kentucky and he went to college at Murray State.

So it is always possible.
