but we watch him like a hawk. as for the husband.. well hes just that a husband.. Boys don't think too clearly about certain things like mischievous puppies who see chickens as running furballs of fun. I am constantly reminding my boy to watch the dog around the chickens. Just a gentle reminder if hes home out and about every hour or two I text him reminding him watch the dog. keep it fresh in his head.. I hope your chicks heal up well. Honey is a good idea its a wonderful thing. Just keep them clean so it doesn't get infected... Goodluck

Thanks for the suggestions!!! When you all say "antibiotic cream" are you talking about plain ol' neosporin type of stuff that I'd have on hand for the kids?

With sugar on the injuries, will the other chicks/hen try to peck more? At this point, my hen isn't too thrilled about the babies. After the pups get some wiggles out, they are contained and I let the hen out so she won't pick on the babies. The pups aren't as interested in the hen for some reason, but that's ok. If given their choice, they go for the cute little babies!

As for the pen door, there is a concreate block in front of it now! No one is getting in, no one is getting out! At least not on their own.

With the sugar/honey remedies, I suppose that would also work on the exposed areas on my hen where my duck pecked and plucked her, correct? Getting a hold of her will be a challenge - she never cared for handling even as a chick.

Yes neosporin will work just makes sure it does not have pain relief in it. I would put the chick with the missing wing in a dog crate away from the others since they will peck at blood, keep her warm and dry she should heal pretty fast.

The babies are cute squeak toys to the puppies. The older hen does not flap around as much. you will have your hands full training those puppies I would make sure to keep a good fence between them. Good luck and I hope you chicks make a full recovery.

No the other birds don't seem to care about sugar in fact I was worried I had put so much on that his feathers would be stuck together forever. But the sugar all dropped of and you can't tell where the wound was or that sugar was used ! Can't speak for honey!

I agree with the sugar or even better, the raw honey.

One of our dogs lost part of his tail, and instead of antibiotic oitment we used raw honey, as per the doctor's reccomendation, and the wound healed really fast. But I guess the chick will still need some oral antibiotics.

Karmlacres,

Sorry I don't have any useful advice to add, but I wanted to wish you luck and let you know we'll be keeping our fingers crossed for your babies.

My advice would be to put it out of its misery. There is a chance it could make it, but not a great chance.
No harm in trying to nurse it back if the pain it's in doesn't bother you and you are willing to put in the time and work.

Good luck to you.

I was going to say raw honey too. We use this for wounds. My mom found this out years ago..she burned her hand on the stove really bad and had no way to care for it..she prayed..and God told her to put honey on it..the pain immediately went away and the next day it was almost healed. Raw honey is filled with good bacteria..it is excellent for wounds!
