Dog Attack -- Need Medical Advice!

I stitched my peachicks with regular sewing thread, as advised by a college animal lab technician who is also an experienced rehabber! It's fine to use what you have on hand, and it should be left in until the tissue heals. However, since the thread will not disintegrate like surgical suture, you will need to remove the stitches in about seven to ten days. Just clip the knots and gently pull the thread. It should come out fairly easy, but it may be a bit hard to find it through the feather buds that will probably have grown in around the injured area. Just use your fingers to locate the little bits of thread sticking out.

Well, I just checked on her wounds, and they look fantastic! No redness, no signs of infection.

My wife cooked a fresh pancake for her (with extra egg in the batter), and she ate and ate and ate. Her crop is HUGE right now.

All looks well. I'll keep checking the wounds daily, and if all is well, I may be taking out the stitches next weekend.

Thanks so much to all of you for your help!

Oh, one more thing...I strongly suggest keeping a buddy with your hen in situations like this. Ever since I put Jenny the Oprington in the inside cage with her, her disposition has improved drastically.

Jenny's treating her like one of her chicks. She's even preening her.

Awwwww... that's so sweet. I'm glad she is still doing okay. I am very impressed that you sewed her up yourself. I know who I'm calling next time I need to do emergency surgery!

Glad she is doing well.
Having a buddy with her is so smart. I nearly lost my sweet roo to a dog attack (yet another irresponsible person) and it was the presence of his good buddy hen Betty that gave him a reason to live. He fully recovered.

Oh yeah, they both had their fill of the pancakes. I fed them small pieces by hand. My chickens have come to the conclusion that if there's food in my hand, it's a special treat. I can throw bread crumbs on the ground and they won't be interested, but if I pick it up off of the ground and put it in my hand, they'll fight over it. Go figure.

The wounds still look great.

She's up and about now and isn't acting like she's in any pain. I put another layer of neosporin on the cuts. I'm going to keep her inside at least until the weekend.

Country Girl in the City...seriously, let me know if you need help in the future. I'll come over!

Thanks again folks!

We should do a meet and greet for all the locals. I have met the nicest local people on BYC!

Glad your girl is better. Keep gooping on the neosporin. That's miraculous stuff!
