The neighbor's dog got the ONLY one I had named on the second day they were allowed out of the coop. The girls snuck under the fence....the injured girl ran back to the coop after the neighbor grabbed the dog.

Matilda Sassaparilla had some blood on her right leg with no other visible injuries. I cleaned her up with salt water (cringe) and then rinsed with plain and it didn't look horrible. (She also didn't complain--which made me feel better.) Just a puncture and cuts on her right leg; given some injuries here, it seems pretty tame.

She is back inside in her box in the bathroom shower where she grew from a day old to about a week ago. I turned on the heater for hypothermia and shock. I made the electrolyte solution I found here (2cups water/ 2tbl sugar/ .5t of salt/.5 t soda) and put both yogurt and her crumble in--all within neck's reach. I have seen one sip of "water". Should I give her scrambled eggs? I think the chick crumble is pretty high in protein.

No heavy breathing. Nothing LOOKS broken (but I likely didn't check as aggressively as a vet since I was afraid of her pain) She was listing toward the side which I think is uninjured, but I thought that might be due to pain on the injured side; she seems more upright now. Right foot seems to not want to work/stays in curled position. Is this a pain response?

The most pathetic chirps are breaking my heart.

Anything else to think about (except how to keep them on the right side of the fence??!)?

I am so sorry this happened! So stressful for both of you. A few of my thoughts
- Were you able to find something to treat the wound after you cleaned it? Neosporin or another antibiotic ointment work great. Or an antiseptic wound spray like Vetericyn. Keep an eye out for signs of infection: redness, warmth, bad smells.
-How long ago did this happen? Shock may be the reason she is not eating or drinking much. In which case give her a little time. If she is still not eating tomorrow, try egg or tuna.
-Beware of flies (because of fly strike). Sounds like she is in a safe indoor environment though, just something to be aware of .
-I am not sure about the leg/foot issue... but I sure a someone else will chime in soon with more advice.

Finally, give yourself a pat on the back. It sounds like you took great care of your little one. :hugs Hope this helps and that Matilda (GREAT name) is feeling better soon!

It was about 6 hours ago. I am attributing her lack of movement with shock "WHAT JUST HAPPENED?! OW!!!!!" She has obviously moved around in there a tiny bit; I didn't move her, but her foot looked more normal.
And THANKS. Being this shook up over a chicken surprised me. Grew up with a HUGE coop and they were just a chore back then; now she is a part of our little crew

Six hours doesn't seem too long for her to still be in shock (I know I would still be shocked!). She will probably perk up and feel like eating after a good rest. Glad to hear the leg seems a little better. Please keep us posted.
And welcome to BYC! Hope you will continue to hang out here once Matilda is back on her feet :wee
