dog attack...what to do?

Thanks for your reply nnbreeder. I have never heard of Electrolites, Pedialite or Gatorade and have never seen them on the shops. I will ask about them next time I am in an animal feed store but don't hold out much hope of getting anything like that over here. I cannot go there today as the store is 15 miles away and they would be closed by the time I got there.

My hen is still alive and sitting in a normal position now. She is missing a lot of feathers and it didn't help that she was moulting. I think I will have to put her in a polystyrene box within the cage tonight to keep her warm.

She should be fine without the extra insulation as long as she is in a draft free area, if she would happen to get too hot and then get chilled it could bring on a respritory infection. I take it you are in the UK or points East? Here is a recipe for homemade electrolite solution. stick to the formula exactly. from the Chicken Health Handbook by Gale Damerow:

1/2 teaspoon potassium chloride.....salt substitute
1/2 teaspoon sodium bicarbonate....baking soda
1 teaspoon sodium chloride..............table salt
1 quart water... only add 2 teaspoons to the water.. no more

Unfortunately I found my hen had died when I went to check on her yesterday evening. My only consolation is that she was a rescue hen and was due to go for slaughter but she had three extra years with me.

Thank you for your help in this matter. Oh, I am in the UK on the edge of Salisbury Plain, about 3 miles from Stonehenge.

I am really suprised the chicken is still alive! I used to raise Scotties and nothing escaped from them although birds were not their favorite prey. But they were very quick to kill what they caught. Good thing you were right there.

produces just realized you lost your hen. I'm sorry she didn't make it.

It is sad that you lost the hen, there can be unseen damage due to the jaw pressure of a dog without puncture wounds. And as you said she did have three wonderful years with you that she otherwise would not have had.
