Dog Attack :(

Red ate the hamburger, lol. He's still looking bad, but his energy is back up.

Sadly, this morning those 3 neighbour dogs got the gate open again & took our Speckled Sussex hen named Freckles. My husband caught them while they were leaving. My daughter is pretty distraught. The gate was still locked, but open :barnie

I don't know if you have a vet but some antibiotics can help if the bite is deep and also u can get pain meds for comfort and it helps sedate while he heals up. Should recover though, if you keep clean and nurse well. Sounds like he earned his meds to me.

I know this Is bad seeing as I myself own six dogs Lol, but id shoot them. Like, its terrible, but THEY ARENT WILD ANIMALS. If you're niebhors care that much theyll put up a fence to keep you from killing their dogs On YOUR PROPERTY! a niebhors dogs once came up the hill and attacked all 3 of me and our niebors houses whith chickens killed 10 of 13 in the niebors flock about 4 years back. My dogs ripped one of them open and the niebors shot the other two dead. The 3rd ironically got caught in electric fencing trying to get away and had to be euthanized. Owners were distraught but it was their own fault their dogs weren't trained or leashed and they couldnt spend 40 bucks to put up a simple wire fence, pretty obvious but they moved the next month. So sorry about your birds hope they make it ok.

I'm giving him penicillin with very small syringes.

We will get some more Speckled Sussex pullets this spring. My daughters will heal their feelings

So sorry about your speckled sussex chicken. The neighbors need to keep their dogs home, but it sounds like you will need to fortify your yard. It is always hard to deal with neighbors and their dogs.

Red’s wound looks dry and leathery, so I would remove the dressing, since it is drying out the wound. It should be dabbed twice a day with saline or sprayed with vetericycn. Then apply a thin coat of antibiotic ointment twice a day. It should stay moist to heal properly. He sounds like he will make a good recovery.

Really sorry about your sussex. That's lousy that your neighbors are not being responsible dog owners. They should be paying for your replacement pullet as well as the medical costs for treating your rooster.

I'd strongly urge an electric fence, if that is any possible option. My neck of the woods is overrun with loose dogs, and the electric fence is an excellent deterrent, plus it's a lot quieter then a gun, and avoids unpleasant confrontations with neighbors.
