Dog attack

Hello, my one of my girls was attacked by a dog today, they did quite the number on the back of her neck and I am looking for any advice on how to help her survive. She is in a safe place with a heat lamp, she has food and water, the water has electrolytes, we have cleaned the wound with a hemorrhage control bandage that I had from my military first aid kit. And have been using vetericyn on her wound. I will post pictures but warning it is very graphic. She is drinking and eating on her own and has defficated. Any advice is much appreciated.

Ok first don't panic.

You have cleaned it.
Now slather it with Neosporin WITHOUT PAINKILLER. Keep it slathered.
A dry wound won't heal.

Clean it once a day with betadine and reslather to keep it moist.

It will take a very long time to heal but it looks like it will heal alright.

I know others will be along soon to lend their wisdom.

However the dog got to her will need addressed so others don't get grabbed.

Thank you so much for the quick reply! That's great information to know, we will pick up betadine first thing in the morning. Is this something that we can get from rural king or tractor supply?

Welcome! If she doesn't have any other wounds, especially abdominal injuries (too soon to be sure) then this may heal beautifully.
Betadine causes cellular damage, don't use it daily! Nolvasan is better and less irritating.
Use 'pee pads' or hospital pads on the floor, not shavings, so nothing else gets into her wound.
Neosporin is good, or Silvadene from the veterinarian or pharmacy (Rx), applied daily after cleaning any goo out of the wound site.
Good food and fresh water. Mush or mash if she eats it better.
It might be necessary to give injectable antibiotics, and that will make her eggs inedible for a long time. Very few antibiotics are now approved for use in or on laying hens, so be aware of that before deciding what to do there.

I thought it was peroxide that caused damage.

When I lost the end of my thumb (work injury) the doctor soaked my thumb in betadine daily for a month.

Betadine is available over the counter just about everywhere that has a pharmacy.

@21hens-incharge , how long ago was that? We used to use it all the time, but not so much now. Peroxide does the same too.

Thank you so much for the advice! Is novalsan available at most locations or is it a specialty item? Unfortunately our nearest vet that sees chickens is well over a hour away so we are trying to avoid that trip. But if I notice any decline in her health we are going. She is not just a chicken to us she is family.
