Dog Attack

Mercy dainerra, 20 dogs is too much digging for me. Wow. Many years ago I thought I was going to cremate one. I had a big pile of debris. Didn't work.

The sheriff here told me the same thing. If I feel need, shoot, but consider the attitude of the neighbor. If that doesn't matter, shoot.

You meet the most interesting people here. I've never shot a dog, heck, I don't even eat chickens. They're far too cute. Yes Terriers have a prey drive but they are also incredibly intelligent. He learned in 1/2 second who he is protecting and who he needs to keep away. If a picture says 1000 words then no more words are needed. In Colorado you have immediate permission to kill anything that comes on to your ranch and threatens your pets. I think my neighbor actually wanted to get rid of that dog, it's just too bad it had to come down to this. Did I forget to mention he's insane?

Those are the folks that never want to come home to the sight of their children having accidentally shot each other. The OP is a very responsible person and shouldn't be made to feel badly about that. I'm sure she'd much rather lose a couple of chickens because the gun was responsibly locked away, than lose a child because it wasn't.

to the OP: Definitely file a police report, because unfortunately they could potentially press a case of animal abuse against you. Additionally, I would buy some live traps and put them around your property so you don't have to worry about shooting the animal. Just take it to the pound several counties over, and if the neighbors ask, just shrug and speculate that dogs roaming loose are prone to going missing for various reasons.

It's not SSS, it's TPS (Trap, Pound, Shutup)

He doesn't dig. There is a ravine at the back part of his property. He takes them back there and dumps them with a bit of lyme. Of course, that is 20 dogs over several years

my neigber shot our other neighbers dog after it killed his flock several times. and every time he would go to the owners and ask then nicley to watch their dog. well it killed his flock once again when he was a work so he told them that if it came over again he would shot it. 2 weeks later it came back and grabbed his sheeps leg. he shot it and put the dogs body on their door step. i think he went a little over the top consedering this family has 2 young kids that could have seen their dogs dead body but their dog would come to our house too. only our flock doesnt free range

Thanks to all for listening to my vent and offering advice. My neighbor was not home, it was her son and his family that happened to pull up in the driveway. We all live on campus together at a boarding school and therefore work together. That makes the situation a bit more tricky! Add in the fact that the husband was killed in a car accident a few weeks ago and the wife is in Canada visiting relatives....

The gun is locked up per the regulations of my employer and my lease. We have small children plus there are a multitude of teenagers in and out of my house. I left my keys at school or else I would have had them to open the gun case. I cannot risk having the gun unlocked. My ten year old is very responsible, but parts of his brain are not as developed as an adult. KWIM?

This same dog tore $200 worth of cloth diapers off the line last year and tried to bite a visitor on campus. He was neutered and they have to keep him tied. I guess the son did not realize all of this? I will give him the benefit of the doubt. Even though a student is feeding the dog every day, I still think it is cruel to leave him tied up alone for over a month. Our boss has gotten involved and the dog may be gone since he tried to bite me. We shall see.

Did I mention that all this happened while I was sick and wearing a skirt?

What a mess. Hopefully the dog will go away.

I feel the need to respond to the gun thing. I understand that it needs to be locked up if there are regulations stating it must be so. BUT - I believe that kids should be taught about guns so that they're not a mystery. I think more kids are shot by "forbidden" guns than those who grow up with them in the house. They feel the need to sneak a look at them or play with them. My boys were given their first .22's before they were 12. They kept them in their rooms. They had friends over. They knew the rules and the consequences for them. (Most of their friends didn't even know the boys had guns because it was not a big deal in our house.) To each his own. I know that not everyone is comfortable with guns, and OP, I can certainly understand why yours is locked up. I just wanted to say that guns are not evil, and just because my guns aren't under lock and key and were out in the open when my kids were growing up does not make me an irresponsible parent.

bobbi-j I don't think it makes you a "bad" parent. Our oldest is 17 and the youngest 18 months. While the older kids are responsible with the guns and understand gun safety, the younger ones do not. Nor do the many teens that are in and out of my house. None of them have ever shot a gun, even a bb gun. They are not my children, but I am legally charged with their safety. Guns are illegal on campus, but I got a waiver with stipulations.

I never grew up with the idea that guns were bad. My dad made me pass safety tests before I could shoot. My mom and her husband kept our guns locked up, but not the ammo. My little brother (at 12) got a .22 from a friend, loaded it up with our ammo, and went hunting by himself after school one day. He didn't know the safety was broken. He dropped the gun and shot his finger off. This is the brother that was thrown by and IED blast and almost had his thumb cut off when he landed on his pocket knife in Baghdad. My first gun was actually a hand gun at around 12. I am going to e. TN to go shooting with my dad this weekend and I am excited! He is taking our ten year-old out for some gun lessons. He is a crack shot, but needs some reinforcement on gun safety. My dad used to teach gun safety, so I think he will be good.

Beat the dog with the shovel.I would suggest a pitch fork, but you would get charged with cruelty.Really your best option is to be ready with the gun and kill it.Could get a huge trap to get it.Or put out leg traps.

Ignore what others say.People are uncomfortable about any issues. No one wants to hear complaints about family,friends,neighbors....we all just want happiness and smiles. I dealt with it when I had to deal with my kid getting bullied.People are sympathetic at first, but after time just try to avoid the subject.Sorry no one gave you even a decent chance to vent.

I would be fuming till I got rid of the dog.Keep the gun key in your pocket. If you know when the dog gets out keep your gun with you.I would hope for you that AC could be called...or the police since they let it out, but are right there preventing your RIGHT to kill the dog. They don't have a right to let their pet torture and kill your livestock.

I would file a complaint with the police even if they are reluctant to accept it.I think they must take the complaint. The dog sounds like a menace and the sooner you take legal action the better. They want to keep the dog then fine, but they should PAY you and pay the city when the dog breaks the law. Did they pay for the diapers? $200 is a lot to let go.And no amount of money makes up for the life of an animal they kill. Will anyone take it seriously if your child gets bit and scarred for life while trying to pull the dog off a hen next time?

Take the hard line with these people otherwise you can look forward to this till the dog dies.Ask your boss if his insurance covers the aggresive dog he permits on his property.Tell your boss the bite incidents and if the dog bites you,a child,or a visitor he should expect to be sued...so update the policy immediately with insurance. That might scare the boss into getting rid of the dog.

Our private school has had an issue with a neighbors dog getting onto school grounds.Ofcourse all the kids want to pet the dog.I let the school know if my kids get bit I will sue them and the neighbor.I probably wouldn't but it lights a fire under their butts to do something now not after.
