So terribly sorry for your loss. It really makes me mad when animals kill for fun, but this is the owner's fault. I'm sure things will be better the second go around. I had such a bad experience with dogs killing our chickens, so now I'm rushing out the door whenever I hear a cluck out of them. The worst part is: I cant help it. Ya have to try not to let it get to ya. But. yes, doggie-proofing your coop will definetely help. Good Luck. Hope some turn up... alive.

I spent over $500.00 for my coop and yard. The coop design I borrowed from this site because it was off the ground and sturdy. The chichen wire for the perimiter fence is burried 12" in the ground to keep those diggers out. I have a neighbor with a small terrier that would kill my flock if he got half a chance. Reinforce the door. If the dog returns, he'll go for the place he was sucessful at last time. Hopefully the owner will be more observant of the K-9. Be carefull with a electric fence. A little one could touch it before you relize they are out of site. I got our chicks for a family project too and I'm sorry for your family's loss. Good luck with your new brood.
