Wolf Branch Homestead's Project 365

Hi everyone, and welcome to our BYC Project 365 thread, where we will attempt to document some of each day's happenings through photos here at Wolf Branch Homestead. Based in Alabama, my husband and I have worked alongside eachother since 2014 on this beautiful land. We enjoy sharing videos of the wildlife, crafting, raising and training our animal friends, among many other projects. My goal is to document a little bit of everything, not just with the flock, but daily life. This journal will be a great way to remember this year. We are getting a late start, but will attempt to carry out every single day for 365 days. Thank you for joining us!

Day #1:
In the last hours of the day, we sit listening to James Spann our state’s wonderful weatherman with live coverage of a storm system moving into and through the state. For years we have trusted his wisdom on these storms and will be listening intently through the evening. Almost the same time last year, we stayed awake during a particularly horrible storm system moving through where he was live for hours warning and watching. We were alert and prepared and fortunate. One can hope all will be safe tonight. Here’s to safety of the people, the animals, the homes, the livelihoods. No major damage or power outages.

Day 2: March 12th, 2026
I went to visit my friend this morning as colder and windier weather moved in. I have been missing her alot as I always do, but as things change here I wish she was here to see everything and be a part of it. I know that she was ill at the end, but there were so many years of exploration and togetherness. I don't know that I will ever encounter such a well-rounded pup again. She would have loved meeting the new ducks and turkeys. I hope she's been able to meet back up with her old puppy and kitty friends. Time has been weathering her marker and collar. Wolf Branch has become a lot of what it is because of her and lessons learned from and with her.

(didn't get to finish writing yesterday, but photo and beginning on day 2)

I used to live in Alabama, and spring is soooo beautiful yet scary at the same time! I miss the abundance of flowers and emerging life everywhere - but not the tornadoes! Praying for safety! 🙏

Day 3: March 13th, 2025
Well of course I didn’t finish this post either! This morning our hard working Black Swedish Duck graced us with yet another egg. It has felt so good to have ducks again and be able to bake and cook with their eggs. Plus, they are fun to watch as they play and swim and quack. They’re not as sociable as our Khakis were years ago, but they are very smart, and we did a lot of early positive interaction training to make handling and evening bed time easier. My favorite thing as of late is a game we call “butt corner” - we have no clue why, but all the boy ducks are obsessed with one particular corner of the pen and they all take turns shoving each other out of the way to stick their booty in the air in the corner up against the post and fence with their front half laying on the ground. Hopefully we can snap a photo of that too.

Day 4: March 14th, 2025
Meet the Meats - a Black Vulture couple who is back at it again in the old barn nesting this year. Two eggs are being incubated, and these birds are welcomed friends because they are so full of personality. Though our flock is always wary to see them fly over, as they should be, the vultures stay to themselves and do no harm. One loves to come to the barn door and perch watching you, the other on their turn for incubation never comes off the nest. I read somewhere they take 24 hour shifts and it does seem so. This is the “Sociable Meat” out this evening, and “Shy Meat” stays on the nest. Even before nesting season they have these personalities, one distanced and one curious. The Meat Family will hopefully, by our calculations, grow by two at the end of March.

Thank you for safe wishes for everyone! It seemed to be an alright night, but more to come this weekend. The state has beautiful weather mostly, but these tornado seasons and hurricane seasons always make me a little nervous. We have been fortunate over the years with all the storms. Thank you for mentioning the flowers, I need to share photos of some of the wild ones blooming! Thank you for reading
