Dog attacked our rooster

Neighbor's dog came on our property and went after the chickens - our rooster did his job and the hens made it into the barn safely, but the rooster took a bit of a beating. He has no tail feathers left at all, but seems otherwise uninjured; he was shocked into being almost catatonic at first, but he recovered and hopped up to run under the car after several minutes.

Do you think he will be okay or is he likely to die from shock? Is there any danger of rabies? [sorry if that is a stupid question, but I don't know if birds can get rabies]

He started eating after we herded him back into the coop, which really surprised me. Should we give him any meds or anything, or just wait and see what happens?

Thanks for any advice or information on this type of situation!

Roosters are pretty tough. Did you see if he had any puncture wounds? He sounds like he is pretty tough!

This is just my opinion. i would probably isolate him tonight and offer some high-protei food and electrolytes. Poor guy. He sounds like he's a fabulous roo!! What a good boy!

If he has no wounds that need care and is drinking and eating fine, I would keep him with his hens. He will definitely recover from the shock. I had a hen attacked with her skin ripped open on her back and now almost six months later, I can't tell her apart from her sisters. Chickens are very resilient.

edited to say... I wouldn't worry about meds unless he has an open wound.

He seems uninjured except for the feathers ripped out - no blood, no visible wounds. Hopefully we'll get lucky and he'll be okay. He is a brave soul! And to think I was ready to replace him because he attacks me all the time. We have a running joke around here that the rooster is trying to kill me.

I told my daughter it's that very mean-ness in him that saved his life and the hens today. LOL I guess he's earned his keep for life now!

Such brave birds! If there is a little bleeding you can put neosporin (without the pain reliever) on his tail
