Dog breeding

With Moms... Doxies mind... nothing happened when Sugarz was in the first (messy) part of the cycle... it's after that, when not icky, that they can do the do and have pups... took Sugarz and Doodles a time or two to figure it out. And that is the extent of my dog breeding quotes.

No Bashing. He wanted advise.

It's extremely expensive to raise a litter. Especially a large litter. I just gave him a basic idea of the minimum of work and items of cost.

I'm about to get bashed now, so hold on.

I have not breed a litter in two years. I can't afford to do it. I will not cut costs and I will not breed to an infertile animal, just so I get a litter. The points brought out here are just basic issues, There is so much more.

I have contracts and agreements that people tell me are harder to qualify for than adopting a human baby. Now I understand how some people who adopt and shouldn't get children.

I will take back any puppy I sell, no matter the age if the seller finds it neccessary to give it up. I have never gotten one back in 40 years except one I removed.

I've paid a small fortune over the years for testing that way back when people thought I was crazy for doing.

I don't have the energy right now to spend time with a litter and keep notes on every thing about them, including temperment to physical.

There are too many rescue dogs out there. My daughter got her wonderful Pitt that way years ago. Awsome dog. But, she will never do it again. I will never take one either. Here comes the bashing. There are breeders who spend their lives bettering breeds and working towards standards and better health. Trust me most are so into training, showing, working, that it can be an absolute drain on their pockets but they do it.

Then you have the puppy millers or people who just haven't learned or undertands that breeding dogs that may later end up in a shelter is just not the way to do it. My furture bashing? I'm sure people are all for rescuing dogs and puppies from shelters and rescue organization. Used to do rescue work myself. It's heartbreaking. I will NEVER ever own a rescue dog. Go ahead I'm horrible I know. But I refuse to encourage people who don't care to just breed more. I don't like some of the organizations (not even going to mention them) that take money from people who want to help care for these animals and don't bother to save them. One in particular (most know) has a record of over 100, 000 dogs and pupppies tkaen in and only 7 were worthy of being adopted out. Guess who that was.

I love Mahonri. I just think his kind heart and love of his family is the reason he is even allowing it. I hope they change their minds. If not. I do hope he puts up puppy picks. I'm not going to bash him for breeding or think he's a terrible person. I hope he decides to research, maybe find a mentor, test both dogs and who knows, maybe these dogs will turn out to be great specimens and the litter will be worth the time, effort and money.

There are lots of downsides to breeding, but most people who love dogs no matter who they are or what they believe, when it comes down to it??? There's nothing like puppy breath.

Might decide I want to edit more for spelling.

Please please don't bring more unnecessary puppies into the world. It's a great experience for kids and all, but honestly, your kids are going to get bored about 5 hours after birth and then what? Do you and your wife have jobs? Assuming you do, who is going to be with the puppies during the day? It is a full time job, and a huge responsibility and cost. Then finding homes, etc for these dogs, and hoping they don't end up in shelters in a few years... I'm sorry, but you just sound very unprepared and that isn't a decision to make lightly. Just because two people are capable of breeding and making a child doesn't mean they should. No one ever thought having a baby was fun and easy and a decision taken lightly, so I don't understand why people think that breeding two dogs that are not unique or extraordinary in any way is some type of hobby. If your kids want a puppy bring them to a shelter and get one... it's a lot cheaper that way, I promise.

I'm telling the boys tomorrow, he goes back home. ...hoping he hasn't done the deed by then.

After reading through the rest of these posts, I'm taking her away from him RIGHT NOW.

The kids can cry all they want... I'm going to read them all of these posts.

Wow, I didn't expect that resolution. Good for you, Mahroni!
If you're not doing it because you are so head-over-heels for the Golden Retriever breed that you are actually improving it by breeding your girl, save yourself an enormous amount of trouble and spay her before they breed.

Bolding mine. This is the NUMBER ONE reason why most people should not be breeding their dogs. It takes much care, dedication and expense to get great stock and also one of the reasons those stupid "designer" mutts make me so nuts.

Take the family to a few shows. Talk to some breeders and let them all learn before doing. If it's something you all want to do somewhere down the road, you'll have some education and hopefully a mentor to help you on the way.

Even if I don't have a show prospect I make sure that a PennHip is done. I used to use OFA, but I like Pennhip better these days. There are lots of certificates that may need to be provided and all breeds differ, so you need to know what to look for in your breed.

You can probably find a breeder who would even put up a puppy for Junior Showmanship ( I did this with GSDs) and later got my first Shepherd from one of the breeders. All my others were imports. I'm saying this because I am and always have been a dog person. If it hadn't been for dogs I may have been in trouble like most people I grew up with, but the dogs and shows kept me occupied with something I truely loved. If they haven't already been, some training classes would be good. Maybe some agility training. It's one thing to go through obedience which is a must, but some other training can be a lot of fun and the kids will be exposed to people who will back you up on the brave step you just took.
