dog breeds that will not chase chickens

We just have a mutt that we got from the shelter!

He is very obedient and loves to please people. If you are looking for a dog, I would look more for

personality in any dog you find, rather than looking for a specific breed and getting a puppy. Shelters

always have great dogs, and if you do end up getting a puppy from there you can socialize it with the

chooks. We got the chickens after we had already had the dog for 4 years, and everything was fine.

Now he protects them from the 'dangerous' squirrels. XD

Best of luck!

We had adopted a full-blood Lab from a shelter. He was a volunteer surrender. He was 2yrs old when we got him and he's just over 9yrs old now. We didn't get out flock until 2yrs ago. To our knowledge he's never been around chickens before, but I trust him completely with them! He grabbed tail feathers when we first brought them home (they were in dog crates and raising a ruckus - tail feathers were sticking out at the time) and I initially had some concerns about it. But once they were set free? Not a problem! He's never chased them and they walk all over him when he's laying out in the yard.

I don't think there is a certain breed that won't bother your chickens. You just need to find a few breeds that are laid back type dogs like boxers and try socializing them with your chickens. I have two pyrenees that guard our chickens.

Yep, i dont think there is a certain answer for this dog. I think we can very seriously discuss dogs that wouldnt make such great pets with chickens, but there is always an exception to the rule. Weve got an elnglish bull terrier who, in his own right, should be a chicken killing machine. He wasnt raised with them, we got them when he was two years old. However, he is a doll with them and respects and protects them. He is a dog aggressive 75 lb bull headed fighting breed with aggression issues that runs from my 4 lb chickens.
I like what one of the above posters said, look for the right personality if youre going with an older dog. If youre going for a puppy Id go with something that is highly receptive to training and lives to please.

We adopted a 2 year old female pitt bull/boxer/?? this summer from the pound. When we first brought her home, she wasn't allowed outside without being on her leash. At first I thought we were really going to have a problem, she pulled on the leash and went nuts trying to get the chickens. I tried Cesar Milan techniques, but she just went nuts. After a week or so one day my husband had it and smacked her on the butt with the end of the leash telling her NO!. Worked like a charm, she runs around with them and hasn't tried to go after them since.

Well, since someone opened up the thread again, I'll join in. We just adopted a 3 yr old female Newfoundland. She’s a replacement for our Pyr.

First day at our home, she had absolutely no interest in chasing the chickens. It’s been more than a month now and she has yet to chase a chicken. Easiest chicken “training” I’ve ever done.

Bear in mind that this is the first Newfie that we have had and there are several factors that could explain why this dog doesn’t chase the chickens. 1) She’s a mature Newfie, a breed known to be good with other pets 2) She came from a ranch. There may have been chickens there. 3) We have 3 other dogs that are good with the chickens hence, she may be following their lead in this area. She has with most discipline issues.

So, in short, I can’t really speak to the question what is the best chicken breed. But, I did get to gloat about my new dog and to tell her story
