Dog crate ?

Can a medium size dog crate be used to house baby chicks until they are old enough to be outside ? Their current set up isn't working out and a friend has a crate we can use .

As far as the size, it depends on how many chicks. Other than that, yes it is fine. If it is the wire type I recommend making a barrier around the base to keep bedding/chicks in better. I used pieces of cardboard.

I've got 8 in an xl crate. They will only be in it for about 2 weeks, then out to the outside grow out pen.

^that is how I brooded my guineas. It worked very well for a couple weeks, but I had thirty so they quickly outgrew it.

yes, you will need something on the floor, otherwise they will be slip sliding around.

My first go with chicks so not a well experienced response... But we did an XL wire dog crate with plastic chicken wire around it and it has been great for the first 2 weeks!
