dog dilemma

I don't understand why people can't just keep the dogs in the house and walk them on a leash. Solves the entire problem. I do it several times a day. I would never dream of letting my dogs run loose.

Whoa! are those dogs eyes huge! lemme guess those dogs are talkative, mouthy, hyper or somewhat spastic? first off those dogs need to run on a treadmill for about an hour then what they need is to go for a 30 min structerd walk come back and work on some obedience training. your dogs pupils are HUGE in those pictures meaning they are stressed and on edge and likly take a nip or a lunge at any sudden moving object or animal no suprise they are going after livestock and chickens. those two dogs could be great working dogs if given the right training! why not try putting them to work with some obedience training? its really not that hard and its quite enjoyable. the first thing i would teach them is some self control which is really quite easy take a favortie ball, toy ect and a treat swing that toy and get that dog grabbing for it which im sure isnt difficult whenever they go to grab it away from you or bounce around hold your hand out opposite olding the toy an holding your palm in front of there face say "wait" and pull hte toy back out of site/reach wait a second for them to sit or calm down and do it again wave it in front of there face if they go for it or get too excited again say "wait" pulling the toy back. once they get the hang of controling themselves and sit calmly not grabbing the toy treat them and remove the toy its important to not allow them to have the toy right after becuase your establishing that even after the game is done they still cant have it (even though you tell them to leave the chickens alone your not going to just say "OK!" and let them have one as a reward) later on you can call them over to take the toy. i could deff help you out on training if intrested

They are both beautiful dogs--------I really would love to have at least the black one, but I have 4 dogs now (all rescues). I think they would be fine as indoor dogs as long as the new owners would be dedicated to walking them at least once a day. Good luck with them.

I think CL would be o.k. as long as you really screen people------one of the best things to do is not only ask for references (Vet, groomer, boarding kennel), but to set it up so you take the dog(s) to prospective owners homes, and make sure they agree to let you come back at least once to check up on the dog.

well, no nibbles on CL, but what i have done is put them on a wire stretching from one pole to another, about 150 feet- so they can run up and down- i also decided to try working with them some- i have had both hips replaced so being jumped on is an issue- they aren't bad dogs, just enthusiastic- i did watch one of the guineas walk within a foot of them and they just layed there- so maybe thats a good sign-

You know, a lot of us have dogs that are restrained from running at large and getting shot by neighbors. My dogs are in a fenced 1 acre area. Would they love to get out and "run"? Sure, they're dogs. Am I being mean to them? Absolutely not.

If you are worried about the dogs being in a lot, well, get them out on a very long leash and take them for a long walk. It's good for the dogs and it'll help you keep in shape. But do not ever insinuate keeping a dog properly restrained is a sad existence, because it's sure better than ending up dead or badly injured by a car or a shooter.

It's nice to think that way, but more animals get "rehomed" and then used for pit bait, snake food, research, you name it. Of course they dont' tell you that when they show up to give your stray animal a wonderful home......they send the best representative to convince you of it though. Why do you think Craigslist flags/bans those ads???
Nice to live in Denial.
I think your best bet for rehoming is word of mouth or an all breed rescue. There are nice people out there that would like a dog. Rescues dont' just take dogs because you are offering a donation either.....if they have room and the dog is sound and adoptable, they will certainly take it....donation or not. If the dog is deemed not adoptable or a danger to people or other animals, it might be best to euthanize. I think it's great that you are helping them out though:) Sometimes someone else's trash is another's treasure. Good luck!

ok, after spending some time working with them, they have settled down to a point that i have them leashed near the chickens, so i come home from the store yesterday and the roo was camped out next to them without an issue-

hubby tells me half the clock was camped out earlier with them
