Lucy attacked a Fox and chased it down the driveway as it stole a young Cockerel. She had her belly torn open by a coyote also! She is a tough little dog with so much heart to protect her belongings..:hugs
She has had puppies twice and she is a Momma that no one messes with her pups either. :clap

Oh wow that a tough dog!! :th

Maybe I am not giving them enough credit.

Smaller dogs to me are smarter than larger dogs. I've owned both and smaller ones always learned quicker. Jolene is fast and very attentive. She knows how to open the gate and she's very sneaky.

Smaller dogs are great!! And definitely smart. A lot of people think they’re stupid or at least don’t bother to train them but they are definitely not!!

Sorry, I didn’t mean to offend or upset or anything.

Smaller dogs are great, I love them, I was just meaning like the bones and stuff when I was saying dainty. Like they’re smaller and could get hurt more easily. Maybe not the ones with thicker/stronger bones like terriers or puggles or whatever but some of like the papillons or tiny little dogs have super small/thin bones and stuff.

But maybe they can defend themselves? Idk.

Just even with the attitude, they could more easily get hurt if they accidentally got stepped on or squished whether by a human or a bigger dog is more what I meant.

But maybe that doesn’t happen as frequently as I am thinking it does???

I love the small dogs, nothing against them at all, and I would love to own one, probably will have several eventually, but I just worry about them getting hurt or injured which is a big thing holding me back. Not that I don’t think they’re great. Just that I wouldn’t want one to get hurt. Especially as little babies.

The adults probably have more attitude but little tiny puppies wouldn’t necessarily have that yet and Libby and Franklin play extremely rough. Body slams and wrestling and the like. But maybe they would adapt their play style for a smaller or younger dog. Don’t know. Never been around them.

But oh wow that’s amazing she survived that!!

Maybe they are tougher than I am giving them credit for.
You didn't offend me just letting you know they don't break easily. I've had small dogs all my life. Only large dogs we had were my father's. My mom and I prefer small dogs.

Oh okay good!! I’m glad! Wasn’t sure ha sorry

That’s good to know though!! Makes me less nervous about getting them! :D

My mom loves little dogs too and wants a cute little lap dog but I want something slightly bigger like a BC or Aussie or Golden.... but maybe we could compromise or find something in the middle. Maybe a terrier or poodle. Or maybe she can get her dog and I can get my dog. :lau

I do love a lot of the little breeds but some of them are so small!!

I like ones I can hug and wrestle and rough house with.

But there is something to be said for a cute little dog I can take places and also not have to worry when visitors come over. :lau

I don't get offended because I know all breeds can do any job if they have the interest in learning it. No bad dogs..:hugs

Very true!! Dogs are amazing!!

Oh my! Definitely not stupid. They work just as hard to please as any large breed of dog.
If your treat them as Foo foo stupids they act like that. If you give them a reason to be tough they are amazing little pets..:thumbsup

They do seem like great dogs!! I personally don’t think they’re stupid or boring or anything and think they are full of personality but I know some people see them that way or as accessories. Personally I think with the right owner and training, they can be amazing dogs!! Some people treat them as an accessory or furry baby and they wind up so spoiled and bratty!! Yappy, aggressive, etc. and some of them think this is cute! :barnie

Realistically though I know this is not the dogs fault and that they are great dogs when not ruined by idiots :lau

We definitely don't hold Lucy! She would be disgusted if treated her like a baby. She is a huge dog in a little suit and lives a dangerous and fantastic life daily. :hugs

This is very helpful!! Thanks!! I do love the retrievers and Goldens really are so sweet but I really think I would like totIry a herding breed. Especially because I love training so I think it would be perfect.

I do sometimes worry I wouldn’t be able to handle one but I think I’m just second guessing myself maybe because with as much as I train and all the areas we have to exercise around here (plus the huge yard), I think it would be fine.

I want to certified as a trainer eventually but I’m not yet but do dog walk/pet sit and have read and watched tons of stuff and always finding more to learn ha

I want to try agility and/or nose work or possibly rally or other sports with a future dog too but if they don’t want to, that’s fine too, but I do think it’d be fun, along with trick training. And the sporting breeds and mixes are fun but I feel like the herding breeds are a whole different level haha
I understand the attraction....I LOVE training!!! IMO....an Aussie would be a great choice. I must say, however, you must do your homework. There are lines that are "hard" and can be aggressive....and there are lots of lines that are kinda cowardly. If you have visions of doing performance events (I LOVE RALLY and recommend as a first performance event)...look for breeders who have dogs that are demonstrating success in performance venues. To me, temperament is everything...so I went to shows, talked to people, and talked to judges....and zeroed in on the kennel I wanted my Aussie from. I drove from Ohio to Connecticut to get a puppy. He is spectacular. He has earned titles in obedience, rally, agility, trick dog....he has a CGCA....he is a registered therapy dog with Therapy Dog International and he helps me in training classes as a demo dog. He and I go tent camping....he just stays where he needs to be. We've done our county's hiking program for the past three years...he's an awesoe trail dog. He is perfect. At ten years old, he still visits two facilities weekly as a therapy dog....including Ronald McDonald House in Cleveland. He and I recently did a tv spot for them. He is bombproof and absolutely reliable. Yes...I did a lot of work with him....but I made sure I got the right pup to begin with. My vet loves him so much she flew to Florida to get a puppy from the same breeder (who had moved from CT to FL). Two other people I know have gotten pups from that breeder based upon their acquaintance with my dog. I hope you find one just like him!! :))
Good luck and feel free to stay in touch....I will be excited to see what you get. :))
