Here’s another tiny dog to add to the list, I heard a lot about them when I lived in the city, but I didn’t live in a trendy area so I never saw one until last year at the pet expo, as a former member of a Siberian husky family, I fell in love, this pic is cute, I prefer the black and white and red and white tho:

Yesss I’ve heard of them too and love them too!! OH! This reminds me of another similar one I love... the American Eskimo Dog lol and not really “small” but I also really love Samoyeds oh and Schipperke

Schipperke can live to like 20 I’ve heard, they are the longest living breed.

Oh wow that’s a long time!! I think most of the little breeds tend to live a long time Or at least longer than the large breeds ha

They also don't suffer from as many joint problems like bigger dogs, well except for the luxating patella. That and they need regular dental care, but all breeds need that.

Another small breed I really like is the Brussels Griffon. The smooth coated ones are like tiny athletic pugs imo. The rough coated ones are adorable with their facial hair. I saw them once at a rescue event, a breeder was walking around with a few, and they were just the cutest. Online pics do them no justice, there is literally no way to see how cute these are until youve seen them in person lol. Even watching shows online, for some reason the camera doesn’t like them, every time I tell people how cute they are, they look them up and are like meh.

If size wasn’t an issue, I would have a Tibetan mastiff. Here are my issues:

1. Lifting and training a huge dog with my bad back

2. I have literally never owned a long haired dog or cat. All that hair is intimidating, if my dogs get grossed up (Peppa Pig LOVES muddy puddles lol) it’s easy to take em in the shower and spray them off, but I think I can’t even fit in the shower with a dog that big!

3. Food and poop, need I elaborate?

Many years ago, maybe 2008, my husband took me to the Westminster for Valentines Day, we had actually been planning to get a Tibetan Mastiff, we were much younger, and didn’t have kids yet, and that huge furry monster was just so appealing. I had spoken to some breeders, looked at many pics, but hadn’t seen one in person. At that time they were a new breed for the akc, so the Westminster was one of the few places to see them in person. Omg, they were the best, I went to the breed area and I met many breeders and dogs, sooooo big. I hadn’t thought it thru that well, but my pug was in heat at the time (At home of course), and I’m kneeling, smooshing this big mushy boy, and he just gets up on me and starts going to town! I was fighting him off, the breeder was mortified, my husband was laughing and taking pics. I guess he smelled my pug!

Yeah that’s true!! The hip dysplasia, cancer, etc. that’s so prevalent in so many of the larger breeds is so sad. but yeah, little dogs do have the dental issues a lot it seems but maybe not every one gets them

I haven’t really looked into them too much but maybe I will haha didn’t realize there was a short coated version!!

And yeah big dogs definitely have a lot of challenges!! Haha we had a Lab/Great Pyrenees mix who was like 140 pounds haha he was a beast but so sweet but definitely a lot of drool and fur, food, poop, etc lol

It’s important to look for a dog with straight teeth and a well aligned jaw, and to keep up with teeth cleaning at the vet. Dogs like bulldogs, pugs, shih tzus, any brachycephalic breeds basically are at high risk because their teeth are mashed together in unnatural patterns a lot of the time, we learned that with our dear English bulldog, who we got from a reputable breeder. He had great health, but bad teeth, and that is what eventually killed him.

They need regular dental care. Many people neglect that until the dog can't eat. I get my dogs in as often as they need it to help prolong their lives and keep them healthy. I learned that after my one Aussie was having failing kidney readings on her blood tests. After a dental everything returned to normal, and my dog was like a puppy again. I say if you see tartar, than there tons of stuff you aren't seeing under those gums.
