Dog eating poo

If you have chicks with coccidiosis, it could be passed to a puppy. Adult dogs aren't usually bothered by it. Their GI tract just pushes it out. my dogs love chicken poo too. it makes their poo stink, and might give them loose stool if they eat a lot.

Our girls free range and German Shepard got coccidiosis with our first group of girls. The girls got treated along with the dog and each time we introduce new girls we treat again. Our vet said it can live in your yard for over a year. So we reinforce, reinforce and reinforce again, the - "leave it" command.

One thing we do that may not be the best is we feed our dogs leftovers to our chickens.

We make them leave it when we are around... but they just do it behind our backs in the same manner they go sleep on our bed/pillow when we aren't home, even though they know we don't approve! :he:duc:mad:

:lau so true! And yes, coccidiosis is fairly common in my neck of the woods in puppies. Perhaps its all the cows around. It affects birds, young cattle, pups, and I think other baby livestock.
But not people.:woot
In most cases with healthy immune systems, it doesn't cause too much trouble. If a really young critter gets over-loaded, it can cause severe diarrhea/vomiting/lethargy/and anemia.
In which case, your vet would probably hook you up with Albon for 10days.

Oooh, and I'm thinking chickens can get roundworms. Which is also transmitable to dogs. But if your dog gets an annual vet check and fecal, chances are it will be caught and dewormed. Pyrantel is commonly used to treat dogs/puppies with roundworms.
(not intended to diagnose or treat, I am not a vet, just have experience with puppies, lots and lots of puppies)
