Dog fight~ they usually love each other~what can I do to prevent?

Aside from the GSD breed, especially female, to not be dog savvy and to push other dogs around...the information provided above is also a big factor in this issue. The dogs are NOT treated equally by you. That causes conflict big time, this isn't a fully integrated pack and the dogs are confused and attempting to normalize the pack structure because the humans are not getting it.

Trying to support Chases dominance is not the right thing to do, it would have been better if you'd have allowed the normal switch of status. It would have been pretty natural and might have prevented what you are seeing now. It's very unfortunate.

As always, you give such great insight!

Dogs seem to have a much better judge of character than we humans...perhaps we should sniff butts too?

I understand your feelings that Chaser is old and your dog and why should he have to pay but...
you really could use a dog trainer that can come into your home and work with you and your husband to help you make needed adjustments and I think Chaser will thank you for learning - so life can be better for all of you

Pack dominance in wild dogs: When Alpha gets old - they will lose the fight to a younger and stronger pack dog that will be the new Alpha and it's natural. The ones that don't submit will be killed or will die from injuries.

Good Luck.

I think I will pass though.

there has been some good advice here.

There is an old dog saying for situations like this. 'males fight to breed. females fight to breathe" In 99% of cases involving male dogs, there will be a few scuffles maybe even an all-out fight, but once the dust settles the dogs will have established their place and everyone is friends. 2 females that have begun to fight can usually never be together again. They will pick up old feuds at the drop of a hat

I'm getting reeeal scared reading this thread..
I have 2 females.. one adult thats spayed..and a 5 month old pup, shes not spayed yet...
And i can already see the pup challenging Daisy in litle ways.... Daisy mostly just tolerates her, but sometimes puts her in her place and makes the pup back down. But the pup KEEPS coming back for more...
I have a bad feeling about this now...
I have NO clue what to do if they start to fight. I couldnt get rid of either of them...

How old is Daisy? Is she young enough to hold her own in a fight? I know of several people who have had rotties kill younger rotties that were trying to establish dominance. In one case, an older female rottie killed her own daughter once her daughter tried to take over dominance. It's pretty scary. Small dog...not too big a deal...I could easily break them up. But if two large breed females got into it, I could do nothing. Read up now on how a single person can break up a fight. You need to know how to do it NOW in case it ever happens.

If I remember right, the method involves strapping a looped leash around the abdomen of one of the dogs. Then back the fighting pair up and tie off the leash on whatever you can find. Then loop another leash around the abdomen of the other fighting dog and start pulling that one backwards, away from the tied off dog.

I have 8 dogs... 6 are female.. 2 of my largest dogs are intact females.. I don't have a problem with aggression, chicken killing (all my birds are free range). It's my folks that have 2 males that are having issues with fighting. So to say it's a female thing.. I would have to disagree unless it's breed specific because I don't have any pit bulls or GSD.
