Dog gashed side from bouncing into chicken run - graphic pics

Both times before they put her completely under. :(
I have read a lot about bandaging it and keeping it clean and moist. I am afraid that if I leave it open she will lick it or the other dogs will or bump into it again. The bandage isn't on tight so it can still heal. I don't know. :hit

What you are doing is OK. Don't worry about it. Keeping her from licking it is a good idea. I can't imagine that there would be any problem, especially since you are putting an antibiotic on it and keeping it clean. I have had very good luck with neosporin but there is nothing wrong with what you are using. Just for the record, I have seen people put a tee shirt on the dog to keep it from licking a wound. I have never had an occasion to try this. I just thought I would throw that out there. In any event, your dog should be all healed up very shortly. Relax. If it is gaping and you want to close it, you can use super glue. Just apply it and hold the wound firmly together with your fingers for a minute or so. No, I am not kidding. This trick was told to me by a man who had been a medic in the Viet (sp) Nam War. He said they used a lot of super glue out in the field. I have used super glue to stitch up teats on dairy goats. Worked better than anything else.

Thanks. We have a t-shirt on her too. And a bootie on her hind foot just incase she wants to scratch an itch.
When it first reopened, we tried steri strips, but they wouldn't hold. I think the area has too much tension.
I am not sure about the super glue as I have heard similar stories, but I also recently read not to do that. She might just end up with a hairless spot on her side.

You spelled it right, it's just one word. Vietnam

And I've heard of the super glue idea and it's amazing it works but wouldn't the chemicals be a problem?

Apparently not. I have recently heard of it being used in hospitals. I figure if super glue was good enough for our soldiers on the battlefield, it was good enough for my critters. That said, everybody I used it on healed up just fine with no infections.

Gracie is currently at the vet's. We decided to go to a vet that was closer and highly recommended.
The vet decided to try to re-suture, but she said it was very likely it would open again due to where it is. She said that the flesh was healthy (something that I was very concerned about). She wasn't too worried about the redness on the outer skin - one reason I decided to take her in this morning.
The other reason I wanted her to be seen was that she was very lethargic compared to her normal self. It really worried us. She also was reacting to the pain by scratching her face and licking her paws obsessively.
This vet is giving her a sedative in addition to the antibiotics and pain med.

This is just my thought ---> She will be on mandatory bed rest for two weeks. Lol. We shall see. ;)

Here is an update. Gracie got her second round of Staples out on Tuesday. It looks really good. The vet said it was unlikely to open again. She said that we should refrain from frisbee throwing, but long walks were ok.

Her face is adorable, she must wonder why you are torturing her? My dogs always looked like they were mad at me when they got hurt. When we picked up one that got spayed, she was giving the vet a real stink eye and then me. She would only sit with my mother.

I missed this reply. I am sure she was confused over the whole ordeal. You wouldn't know anything has happened to her though - she is just as active as ever!
She is a very sweet dog too. :)
